Waco, like many other college towns, has an abundance of coffee shops for students to study in. While students often settle for convenience when it comes to their coffee, Dan Moroso, owner of recently opened Italian cafe “Azzurro,” urges them to venture out of the Baylor bubble to Bosque Blvd for a cup of coffee they won’t forget.

As the weather cools, the air crisps and the leaves turn to those beautiful autumn colors, what better to celebrate the season than by enjoying a warming beverage? Of all the spots in Waco that get into the fall spirit, let’s take a look at a few places that may have flown under your radar.

From going across campus for classes and extracurriculars to maintaining a social life, students don’t have extra time to wait in line for food and coffee. Grubhub and the order-ahead options at retail locations are some of the most efficient things Baylor Dining has brought to campus.

There are tons of options from Venezuelan food, pizza, sandwiches and more to sweet treats, juices and acai bowls galore. There’s truly something for any taste at Zilker Park.

As a former Starbucks barista, I used to dread the start of fall drinks. Every August, my coworkers and I would be bombarded by groups of people enthusiastically ordering the most famous seasonal drink: the pumpkin spice latte. I’ll admit, when I was a 15-year-old, I also enjoyed a festive pumpkin beverage, but after working at Starbucks and being around it, I’ll say it doesn’t deserve the hype that it gets.

Belinda Olivares, who has worked at Baylor for 16 years, makes everyone who walks by the Moody-Memorial Library Starbucks feel loved by calling them by name, knowing their coffee order and playing fun music.

To me, one of the best sides on Earth is a slice of bread. Not just any bread, but a crispy slice of Italian restaurant bread dipped in olive oil and balsamic glaze. It’s the perfect compliment to most dishes, but especially a good, comforting pasta.

While neither entrepreneurs envisioned owning a coffee shop as their ‘when I grow up’ trope, they have successfully created a brand that has spread kindness throughout the Waco community.

There are several downsides to the drink, including yellowed teeth, peaked anxiety and a drained bank account, but the health concerns don’t stop there. This poses the age-old question among diligent coffee consumers: to drink or not to drink?

We’ve all been there — it’s 2 a.m., you just finished a paper that’s due in three hours, and you haven’t even started studying for a test you have the next day. The automatic next step is to turn on the Kuerig you got for high school graduation and make yourself another cup of coffee.

Many people will pull up to a drive-through window at McDonald’s and order a McCafe Frappe Mocha in order to treat themselves or a get a caffeine boost. Coffee shops in Waco, however, believe that they’re offering something more than a quick fix –they say that with their coffee and service they’re offering an experience.

Jessie Harris, store manager of Trailhead Coffee Shop on the corner of University Parks Drive and Franklin Avenue, said there is a difference between the “coffee culture” and the coffee industry. Coffee culture, he said, is more about the attitude behind making coffee, whereas the industry of coffee is more about making profits.
