As graduation approaches, Baylor seniors are preparing to leave behind more than lectures and late-night study sessions. However, before leaving, students have an opportunity to explore parts of the city they may have overlooked. The following destinations offer a reminder of what Waco has to offer.
Browsing: Cameron Park
Between Braxton Keith, food trucks and mahjong, Waco has a stacked list of upcoming events. While Waco never fails in the small-town charm department, the week’s lineup of events is something bigger than the average Wacoan may be used to.
This March, Cameron Park Zoo introduced four new camels and two new ostriches to the zoo community. The staff hopes to encourage hands-on care and compassion for these animals to inspire a heart for conservation and animal activism in younger generations of zoo-goers.
Bluebonnets are springing up all over the highways, Cameron Park and every grassy corner of Waco. While the iconic flower tends to attract roadside photographers, most people don’t know the risk they are taking when they stop.
Saturday morning, students, faculty and members of the Waco community gathered for the Bearathon. Through this, Student Foundation raised money for student scholarships.
Now that the winter months have passed and the sun is consistently shining, there are so many opportunities to be outside and enjoy the fresh air. One of my favorite ways to enjoy the nice weather has been taking walks outside. Walking has consistently improved my mood, eased my anxieties and provided a fun way to exercise.
With all 1,700 spots filled, Student Foundation achieved a record-breaking number of sign-ups for the Bearathon, selling out of tickets more than a month before the race.
Run With Christ, a nationally known organization, recently launched its Waco branch. Every Saturday morning, the club meets in Cameron Park for a devotional and worship before participants set off on a three-mile run or one-kilometer walk.
Zoos get a pretty bad rap. For a place filled with furry friends and fantastical creatures, you’d expect the general sentiment toward them would be slightly positive, if not outright supportive.
At nightfall, Cameron Park Zoo transforms into a brilliantly-lit Christmas wonderland complete with photo opportunities, food trucks and a visit from Santa Claus for the zoo’s annual Wild Lights event.
Every Wednesday from March through October, Park Rangers lead free hikes in Cameron Park to help the public explore the trails. Each week, around 40 participants join the rangers to learn more about the park and build community in nature.
“The more people we have on the rides, the more fun we have,” Smith said. “Because like, bombing down a trail with a train of seven people, all super close together, is the coolest feeling ever.”
Students looking to embrace the great outdoors this semester can take advantage of a lineup of activities offered by Outdoor Adventure. From scenic hikes and camping trips to rock climbing and kayaking, the spring schedule promises opportunities for exploration, fitness and fun catering to all skill levels.
“So by incorporating the technology, it will allow us to take virtual programming into pockets of the community and or communities that otherwise could not get here, and we can do that at a much more affordable rate,” Wiley said.
Serena Teakell, the founder and coven mother of the Balefire Coven in Waco, said most people have misconceptions about what witchcraft is.

My heart shattered when I read the news about Laken Riley. Her murder was the first homicide on the University of Georgia campus in almost 30 years, and it should serve as a humbling reminder that it can happen anywhere. The twists and turns of Cameron Park and the Bear Trail are certainly not much different terrain.
