Four months ago, Houston sophomore Brooklyn Joseph began her hair locking services after doing a favor for a friend. That talent soon turned into a business venture. Joseph’s business offers starter locs, retwists and styling, which has allowed her to make money while in school.

We are in the final stretch of the semester, and the monthlong holiday break is within reach. With that in mind, the Arts & Life desk would like to share our favorite Christmas crafts that you must try this holiday season.

With Thanksgiving just a week away, it only feels right that we talk about everyone’s favorite part of the day: the food. The A&L desk would like to share our favorite Thanksgiving sides and possibly inspire you to include them in your celebration.

As college students, we also often underestimate the difference we can make. Money and time feel tight and often leads us to neglect giving back because we feel we wouldn’t be able to do enough or anything that might actually make a difference. “You share the stoke together,” Balzora said. “The stoke is like the excitement … That’s how I came up with the name for the club. I wanted people to be excited about it and try something new and do it together.”

“Instead of celebrating the holiday, it becomes celebrating the coming together again, which is true for a lot of international families,” Oh said. “There’s a special element to it. It becomes more of being present with the family and just enjoying each other’s company.”

“Sometimes people don’t associate Christmas with faith,” Sobh said. “People often think, ‘why wouldn’t you celebrate Christmas, why wouldn’t you get a Christmas present?’ I feel like it can isolate people who don’t celebrate Christmas, especially people of the Jewish faith or non-Abrahamic faiths.”

In honor of the season, the A&L staff would like to share some of our favorite holiday traditions. If there are some that pique your interest, don’t hesitate to incorporate them into your holidays!

“I think I would probably die in a corporate job where I’m working 9 to 5, and it’s just not who I am. So I love the aspect that everything’s different every day; no day is going to look the same. And, I don’t know, just seeing that growing up, I feel that totally inspired me and encouraged me to start something like this.”

There’s 16 days until students have to travel back to their families for Thanksgiving and only 37 days until the first day of finals rolls around. Did that countdown stress you out? Don’t worry, the A&L staff has advice on how to relax before the end of the semester is here.

On a dark Halloween night, a crescent moon hung low overhead as an autumnal breeze blew costumed concertgoers like Cruella de Vil, Spider-Man and Princess Peach to Jones Concert Hall for a Halloween Organ Concert that was sure to cause Waco’s ghosts and ghouls to stir.
