“I was like, man, it [Waco] just has this bad reputation that is totally undeserved,” Garner said. “So I thought, I’m gonna make a television show and use Waco sort of as the poster.”

Four months ago, Houston sophomore Brooklyn Joseph began her hair locking services after doing a favor for a friend. That talent soon turned into a business venture. Joseph’s business offers starter locs, retwists and styling, which has allowed her to make money while in school.
“At the beginning of the semester, they would ask me, ‘Why am I taking this course?’, but they realize at the end, there’s so much more to death and dying than just ‘I’m going to the service,’” Klempnauer said.
This year, the tradition returns in its full glory, opening with a piece called “Light Beyond Shadow.” According to Dr. Lynne Gackle, director of choral activities, the piece will set the theme for the concert, representing how the world and Baylor in particular have moved through the pandemic.

With Thanksgiving just a week away, it only feels right that we talk about everyone’s favorite part of the day: the food. The A&L desk would like to share our favorite Thanksgiving sides and possibly inspire you to include them in your celebration.
As college students, we also often underestimate the difference we can make. Money and time feel tight and often leads us to neglect giving back because we feel we wouldn’t be able to do enough or anything that might actually make a difference. But whether it is $5 or $500, a difference can be made.
“My favorite part is the interaction between people who buy things from me,” Sartor said. “So when I get to do things like that, it’s when I really get excited about it.”
“You share the stoke together,” Balzora said. “The stoke is like the excitement … That’s how I came up with the name for the club. I wanted people to be excited about it and try something new and do it together.”
The group of 15 students introduced themselves letting the audience know that even though they were from different majors, they had singing in common.
Generation Z has never lived in a world where the internet has not existed, which makes it “a force in business across industries, brands and digital platforms,” according to Forbes. This is why brands are very focused on marketing to Gen Z in the right way.

“Instead of celebrating the holiday, it becomes celebrating the coming together again, which is true for a lot of international families,” Oh said. “There’s a special element to it. It becomes more of being present with the family and just enjoying each other’s company.”
As we approach the end of the semester and the holiday season, we need to focus a little more time on the festivities; after all, this only happens once a year.
“Sometimes people don’t associate Christmas with faith,” Sobh said. “People often think, ‘why wouldn’t you celebrate Christmas, why wouldn’t you get a Christmas present?’ I feel like it can isolate people who don’t celebrate Christmas, especially people of the Jewish faith or non-Abrahamic faiths.”
“I’m very grateful for those traditions looking back,” Renshaw said. “I definitely took them for granted at the time.”
In honor of the season, the A&L staff would like to share some of our favorite holiday traditions. If there are some that pique your interest, don’t hesitate to incorporate them into your holidays!
“I feel like even if you’re not a runner you can just kind of go out and walk and it’ll take you like an hour max and that’s your study break for the day and you get a T-shirt,” Hardin said. “So, and know you did something good too instead of just sitting at home.”
“Style is what you make it. Trust your own style and develop it, and if you’re confident people will appreciate it. Just have fun and explore.”
“I think I would probably die in a corporate job where I’m working 9 to 5, and it’s just not who I am. So I love the aspect that everything’s different every day; no day is going to look the same. And, I don’t know, just seeing that growing up, I feel that totally inspired me and encouraged me to start something like this.”

Every semester, student organizations across campus volunteer in the Waco community through Steppin’ Out. This day of service doesn’t happen overnight; preparations begin at the start of each semester. On Saturday, there will be approximately 1,500 volunteers at Steppin’ Out.
On Oct. 28, the Student Financial Literacy program changed its name to Student Financial Wellness. The program announced the change on Instagram, stating in the caption that the change was made to reflect the scope of its mission at Baylor.
There’s 16 days until students have to travel back to their families for Thanksgiving and only 37 days until the first day of finals rolls around. Did that countdown stress you out? Don’t worry, the A&L staff has advice on how to relax before the end of the semester is here.
Due to weather, the 5K run has been canceled, and the concert venue has been moved from Fountain Mall to the Palladium, located at 729 Austin Avenue.
