Baylor’s newest haircut spot is in Martin Residence Hall.
Martin Cuts, run by Clemmons, North Carolina, freshman Isaac Williams and Brandon Martin, allows male students to get haircuts right on campus.
Williams, the primary person who cuts hair, said Martin Cuts originally started as a joke.
“Brandon thought it would be funny to post a transition video of me cutting his hair,” Williams said. “We soon realized that lots of guys needed to have someone they could trust to cut their hair, and it’s only been uphill from there.”
On Instagram, Martin Cuts has 173 followers as of Sept. 29.
Martin runs the Instagram and manages client requests.
“When we get a message, I normally just tell them to text Isaac if I’m not with him in person, but if I’m with him I just respond and ask when they need the cut done,” Martin said.
For the clients, Martin Cuts isn’t just a way to get a fresh haircut, it’s a way to foster community.
Georgetown freshman Drew Solomon said he had a great time in the chair.
“although it was a short time talking to him, it was still a great time and I was able to get my haircut, which was something I had needed done,” Solomon said.
Isaac Williams wants to bridge the gap between great cuts and even better community.
“From what everyone has told me, there are not many good barbers in Waco that they can trust to give them consistent haircuts, which gives me a huge opportunity to become a trusted and reliable barber for them,” Williams said. “I feel that Martin Cuts is a big community builder as word of mouth continues to spread, giving me and Brandon the opportunity to talk with a bunch of guys and have open conversations about ‘getting my Isaac slash Martin Cuts.'”
While the haircuts are not free, Martin Cuts tries to keep their prices as reasonable as possible.
“I tell people to name their price, all depends on what they want and how much they typically pay,” Williams said. “I try to make them a good deal.”
Martin Cuts isn’t just for Martin residents, men from all residence halls and off-campus spots can come and get their hair cut, further building community.
“I think Martin cuts does a great job of fostering community by serving a connection for all of the different residence halls,” Martin said.
Those who have gotten haircuts from Martin Cuts sing high praise, with Solomon even saying it’s the best haircut he has ever gotten.
“I think everyone should go there,” Solomon said. ” … They know what they’re doing and are serious about making each customer happy.”
