In college, students strive to build friendships that are as close as family. But at Baylor, family can be closer than you think. For three students, life changed overnight when they met on campus and discovered they were long-lost cousins after tracing their family lineage back to the Ghanaian Ewe tribe.

The Barfield Drawing Room bustled with students Wednesday and Thursday as students gathered to connect through culture at LatinX Night and Asian Mosaic Night, respectively, which concluded the Mosaic Week hosted by the Multicultural Affairs Office.
In Baylor’s fight song, the lyric “We’ll fling our Green and Gold afar” is often associated with graduates as they embark on their next chapter. Through the Center for Global Engagement Ambassador Program, however, some students are already lighting a way for new generations to follow on campus.

To make the jump into college life less overwhelming, the Counseling Center offers advice and resources to help struggling students, including group and individual therapy sessions, dietetics for students needing a personalized meal plan and crisis appointments.
“As long as I can remember, I wanted to be a lawyer who helps kids, and Adoption Day made Baylor Law an easy choice for me,” Kitchenka said. “My favorite part is seeing the joy on the families’ faces when their adoptions are finalized. It’s such a meaningful and fun day for everyone involved.”
“I do think it has a great meaning, especially with the history and how it all started,” Chaves said. “I think it’s very nice to experience that in the whole week, and as an international student, I get a sense of home or belonging.”
Baylor’s Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in STEM recently received national recognition for their efforts in celebrating culture on campus.
Other than diversity, Baylor was recognized in seven different categories this year: job satisfaction and support, mission and pride, faculty and staff wellbeing, compensation and benefits, supervisor effectiveness, confidence in senior leadership and professional development.

“I really, really appreciated that the university took the initiative to allow us to have an official voice and an official presence,” Jortner said. “There’s a big difference between one professor in the theater program arguing for something and an organization of faculty saying, ‘We speak as one, and this is a concern.’”
“This is a time for family and friends to gather and gaze at the moon together — even if they are miles apart — and then enjoy some delicious moon cakes afterwards,” Lin said.
Asian Mosaic Night, hosted by the Department of Multicultural Affairs, celebrated diversity at Baylor by bringing students, faculty and staff together through music, food and tabling at 5:30 p.m. in the Barfield Drawing Room at the Bill Daniel Student Center. It was also an opportunity for students to learn about Baylor’s Coalition of Asian Students.
Brown said they have a wide variety of trainings that happen throughout the two weeks; some are specifically geared towards returning CLs, and some are targeted at those new to the role.
It’s a privilege to be in Greek Life, and I know not everyone has the luxury of spending thousands of dollars on top of their tuition. By the grace of God (and my mother), I’ve had the opportunity to join a sorority with the most amazing group of women.
“While we do heed our sorority’s goals and ambitions when looking for new girls to join us, we do not look for the same type of person,” Newport News, Va., senior Courtney Hodge said. “We pride ourselves on diversity, and we all come from different backgrounds ourselves.”
