On March 16, 2022, Sophy, a Baylor student who asked we not use her last name, was in the middle of a work shift in Harrington House taking out the trash when the professor she was working for told her she noticed that a man stood behind her for a moment and then walked away.
“Waco PD received an active threat call on the Baylor Campus just after 9:30 a.m.,” Cierra Shipley, Waco PD spokesperson, said via email. “Waco PD and Baylor PD responded, determining the call was a hoax and there was no active threat on campus.”
“Around 9:45AM, Baylor Police responded to a call to Waco law enforcement alleging an active shooter at the ITS building on the Baylor campus,” the alert stated.
Rumors spread on social media that same afternoon that someone had pulled a gun around the apartment complex, to which Waco PD spokesperson Cierra shipley said via email no weapon was located at the time of the arrest. The initial reason for the first 911 call to the apartment complex is currently unknown.
“The Waco Police Department works very closely with the Baylor Police Department no matter the time of year,” Shipley said. “If students are choosing to leave their residence for spring break we ask you make sure all doors, windows, garages and gates are locked. Do not leave spare keys outside or with an individual you do not know well.”
