While seasonal depression has many effects, there are just as many ways to combat seasonal depression. The more common treatments include vitamin D supplements, light therapy, psychotherapy and prescribed medications. With the days ending much earlier in the winter than the summer, people suffering from SAD may plan to watch the sunset most evenings for vitamin D exposure and to help adjust internal clocks.

“We just want to take care of the family in that moment and then remove ourselves, so the family can grieve,” Discreet Clean owner and Baylor alumna Lance Summey said. “We don’t necessarily need people to see what we see on a day-to-day, week-to-week basis. That’s not why we do what we do.”

“Reiki is constant. It’s never not there,” Moles said. “We have chakra systems in our body, and ultimately, we want those up and running. We want them to be in a balanced position, and that creates a cohesive subconscious and conscious connection because you’re at a higher vibrational frequency.”
“[Baylor University Counseling Center’s] mission is to foster wholeness for every student through caring relationships, cultural humility and integrated mental health services,” Annie Mathew, the director of the counseling center, said.
“I think everybody has overwhelming, stressful lives that they lead; [they] get bogged down, but coming out here and doing something different, getting to meet these animals — it’s something totally satisfying,” Sabre said.
In a society that encourages and praises strength, resilience and that “boss babe” mentality, vulnerability is often overlooked or viewed as a sign of weakness. However, beneath the surface, there is a profound power in being vulnerable.
Like any and all heritage months, Women’s History Month gets the same criticism. People often express the idea that Women’s History Month excludes men, but it’s time we realized that this month is for all of us — an opportunity to reflect on our history and grow from it together.
Before the space at 1319 N 15th St. became Jubilee Theatre, it was an adult theater known as “The Capri” — an avid hotspot for drug dealers and prostitutes until it shut down due to a recession. Mission Waco obtained the deed to the space for free in 1994, and it immediately began raising money to restore the building and craft it into a space for community theater.
You may have noticed over the weekend that the sun started to set around 5:30 p.m., and afternoon turned into the dead of night in the blink of an eye. Even though winter won’t be upon us until Dec. 21, the end of daylight saving time marks the beginning of the darkest months of the year. From now until mid-March, many may struggle with seasonal affective disorder, also commonly referred to as seasonal depression.
All services offered by the Counseling Center are free, including telehealth services, face-to-face counseling and the mental health clinical support line. However, some programs that fall under the health services category — such as general medical care, medical nutrition therapy and psychiatric services — require payment, which is usually covered by insurance.
Dean of Student Health and Wellness Jim Marsh said that in the 2018-19 academic year, the counseling center saw 2,400 students. This number declined during the pandemic and since, the counseling center worked toward an efficient and realistic solution to help students despite social distancing and health precautions, resulting in the Telehealth service.
