Laura McNutt, assistant director of advising in Baylor’s College of Arts and Sciences, died April 17 at her home in Waco after a three-year battle with colon cancer. She was 38.
The message given was clear. Tenure does not take a single year, nor does it require a specific population. It takes consistent writing, strategic and effective planning and helpful collaboration. As stated, for faculty beginning their careers, the most important place to begin is simply to start writing.
History professor Dr. Daniel J. Watkins was just selected to be one of 20 members on the National Humanities Council for the 2025-26 academic year. Watkins and other members from 12 states will collaborate to plan and promote NHC resources for various universities and programs.
According to the Texas Collection Digital Archives, the first issue in 1900 included two female associate editors: Eunice Taylor and Sarah Rose Kendall.

Baylor history professor Dr. Robert Elder is the first Baylor faculty member to be awarded the Public Scholars grant from the NEH to help his future book project about the nullification crisis, a conflict between South Carolina and the federal government in the 1830s.
Baylor professor Dr. Saralyn McKinnon-Crowley brought her love of trivia to the national stage last week when she competed on “Jeopardy!”, fulfilling a dream years in the making.
Baylor held its annual Faculty and Staff of Color Reception Thursday afternoon to welcome new staff for this school year and celebrate plans for the new year, one being the new memorial on Founder’s Mall.
“Serving as president and carrying on from those before me is a distinct honor and privilege,” Haines said. “Particularly because as I have looked at the list of presidents, there are many that I have known and have been friends with, never imagining that I would ever become president of such an esteemed organization.”
“I love to research and I love to write. And this is a place where I can use those gifts and also help students as they discover their own calling,” Myers said.
“Pay incentives can lead to jealousy among faculty members,” Cox said, observing that the system could unintentionally favor teachers with smaller or more advanced classes, sparking concerns about fairness.
“It started when I was about 9 years old,” Little said. “I was one of those nerdy little kids who spent her lunchtime in the library reading real ghost stories.”
The U.S. News annual best colleges report was released last Tuesday, ranking Baylor among the best in the nation for undergraduate education and first-year experience.

According to a Baylor email announcement sent to all faculty and staff on March 26, the cost of student meal plans has increased steadily with inflation, allowing for institutional subsidies on faculty and staff dining to remain the same for nearly two decades. However, due to inflation, the university has decided to raise faculty and staff dining rates.
The Christ-Centered Diversity and Belonging Council hosted its Monthly Social Hour from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursday at the FOS Atrium. The event was a come-and-go meeting where faculty, staff and students were invited to socialize and celebrate the faith theme of the month.
“As we appreciate our campus and all of the good things that come from it, we really want to instill in our students that is such an important part of society to give back,” Lynch said.
Senate members passed three bills Thursday that include having wi-fi in Baylor Stadium, creating parking spaces for mopeds and scooters and the increasing the number of staff members at Baylor who can help provide students with career opportunities.
The wi-fi bill would include enhancing mobile broadcast and wi-fi coverage during games and events in Baylor Stadium, said said Dallas junior Connor Mighell, campus improvements and affairs chair. The bill supports the Board of Regents’ proposition to install a number of telecommunication networks in the new Baylor Stadium.
