Students from the Baylor chapter of Campus Kitchen Projects have found a niche as student chefs with the organization, which provides healthy meals for families and individuals in need. Canton senior Abigail Brantley, the organization’s kitchen director, and Victoria senior Amy Lott, a kitchen manager, spoke about the organization’s impact on the Waco and Baylor communities.

Wasting less by feeding more is the name of the game for the folks at Baylor’s Campus Kitchen.

Tuesday afternoon, members of Campus Kitchen met at the Mary Gibbs Jones Family and Consumer Sciences Building to begin the first daily food collection of the semester. Memorial, Penland and Collins dining halls kept leftover food hot for the pickup after 3:30 p.m.

Campus Kitchen is a national service organization that helps students relieve hunger in their communities by working through universities and high schools.

A new discipline-based internship will be offered by the National Campus Kitchens Project in Washington, D.C., this summer, giving a Baylor sociology major the opportunity to participate in undergraduate research.

Finally, Waco has a place for residents to buy fresh, farm-grown products from a variety of local vendors close to campus. After its grand opening last Saturday, the Waco Downtown Farmers Market had a great response from locals and college students.

Senior year of high school wraps up between a backpack full of memories and a graduation cap. But for seniors, somewhere between taking the SAT and hearing the bassoons in “Pomp and Circumstance,” a package arrived at the door — and a decision had to be made.

Baylor has more than 15 official student organizations dedicated specifically to service, numerous fraternities and sororities that require members to volunteer, and various other opportunities for students to get out into the community and lend a helping hand. However, not all students choose to actively volunteer in the community.

Campus Kitchen, an organization that gathers excess food from on-campus dining halls and provides meals to people in the Waco community, is collecting Thanksgiving dinner donations for this year’s Turkeypalooza.

Aramark presented a check for $3,000 to the Campus Kitchen Community Garden on Wednesday morning. The completely organic and self-sustainable garden is used to grow produce to donate to programs that feed the needy.

It’s just before 5:30 p.m. As volunteers prepare food for serving, a line of men, women and children form outside the door. The people in the line outside are carrying handbags and backpacks, or they are hiding empty hands in their pockets.

Campus Kitchen cooking and delivery shifts start back up today. Show up in the Family and Consumer Sciences parking lots at 3 p.m. every week day to help out with dining hall pick-up and delivery, or come to the kitchen in the FCS building at 3 p.m. today or Thursday to help out with food preparation.

Despite adverse weather conditions and sudden venue changes, the Baylor population and the Waco community came to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the dedication ceremony of the Baylor Community Garden.
