Men's Basketball
Coming off another second-round exit in the NCAA Tournament, Baylor men’s basketball is up and running after its first fall practice on Tuesday ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Baylor basketball’s new home, the Paul & Alejandra Foster Pavilion, is projected to open on Jan. 2 for the men’s team and Jan. 3 for the women’s.
From familiar foes to new faces, the 2023-24 Big 12 season will be filled with first times and last times, meaning the Baylor Bears are in for potentially one of the most hyped seasons of all time.
Women's Basketball
Baylor MBB earned No. 1 seed and WBB earned a No. 2 seed for the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
No. 4 Baylor women’s basketball fell to No. 7 University of Texas, 67-58 in the Big 12 Championship final Sunday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo., snapping their 12-game winning streak as well as a 13-game winning streak over the Longhorns.
Senior forwards Nalyssa Smith and Caitlin Bickle both picked up career highs in points to push Baylor women’s basketball to the Big 12 Championship game.
Equestrian
No. 4 Baylor equestrian earned a 12-8 victory over the No. 7 Oklahoma State Cowgirls on Saturday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center.
The Bears earned a 4-1 victory in flat, while OSU won 4-1 in horsemanship to tie both teams at 5. Baylor sealed the win by finishing with a 4-1 advantage in fences to win the Big 12 competition.
Class from 8 a.m. until noon. Lunch. Then practice and rehab. Practice for four hours. Go home, eat and study. Try to be in bed by midnight.
Acrobatics and tumbling senior, Ginger Plemmons balances all of the above exceedingly well. She manages to stay focused on the mat and carries a 3.86 GPA.
“Well, I don’t get that much sleep. I mean you just have to stay motivated to succeed at both,” Plemmons said. “So I just study in between practice or really late at night. Whenever I have time really.”
Baylor’s equestrian team scrimmaged Saturday with an exhibition meet against Southern Methodist University. Baylor won Western 6-4 but lost Hunterseat 7-5 and the overall competition after a tiebreaker was enforced.
Baylor’s head coach Ellen White remained upbeat after the meet.
“It was exactly what we wanted to do,” said White.
It was an opportunity to see which players were going to step up and to work out the kinks of hosting an event, White said.
Tennis
No. 3 Baylor moved on to a 17-3 record with a 5-2 win over Arizona.
Women’s tennis came up with a strong opening sweep of Iowa State in conference play.
Interim head coach Michael Woodson has been a consistent presence for the Bears during his time in the program and has coached Baylor to a No. 2 ranking and a 16-2 record in dual-match play this spring.
Golf
Though her team was not offered an at-large bid to the NCAA West Regional May 5-7, junior Chelsey Cothran became one of six individual golfers offered an at-large bid to travel to Auburn, Wash. Cothran is the first Baylor golfer in program history to receive the individual bid.
Baylor women’s golf coach Sylvia Ferdon announced Tuesday she will retire after 17 years as the Lady Bears’ head coach. Her Baylor coaching highlights include 10 NCAA Regional appearances and three third-place finishes at the Big 12 tournament.
The Baylor men’s golf capped off the regular season with a fourth place finish, ahead of Big 12 foes Texas and Oklahoma, at the Aggie Invitational on Sunday in Bryan. The No. 46 ranked Bears finished at 41-over-par (376-377-368=1121) for their sixth top-five finish this season.

In the 2023 season, Major League Baseball officials added the pitch clock to aid the speed of the game. After the season and now into 2024, I’ve seen that the pitch clock has been very useful and has accelerated the pace of the game.
