Dr. Dave Bridge, an associate professor of political science who teaches a course on campaigns and elections, said he thinks celebrity endorsements don’t really tend to persuade voters who are set in their thinking — unless that celebrity is Taylor Swift.

“By the time you are 85 or 90 years old, you will know a lot of women that have had breast cancer, since it happens to one in eight women over the course of a lifetime,” Stern said. “Outside of skin cancer, this statistic makes it the most common cancer for American women.”

Through Baylor Buddies, Baylor students serve as mentors to students in schools in the Waco Independent School District. They are partnered with Communities In Schools, which assists mentors with their mentee’s specific needs.

“As Baylor Lawyers, we have a professional obligation to serve those who cannot afford counsel,” Josh Borderud, director of clinical and pro bono programs and clinical lecturer, said. “Serving veterans, first responders, and children through our clinics is one of the ways that we give back to the Waco community.”

It’s important to have such beliefs and opinions, but when you’re deconstructing a tragedy and interpreting what happened during it for political gain, you’re no longer just stating your opinion. Instead, you’re taking the tragedy, removing the tragic aspect of it — the side that calls for sympathy or understanding — and using the situation for your own gain.

Think about the opportunity that lies before you: the opportunity to experience a true liberal arts education. One day, years from now, you may be rounding in a hospital or working in a lab. Taking a few classes in the humanities isn’t going to prevent you from attaining that success. If anything, it will better you both personally and professionally.
