Every year the Lariat editorial board interviews student body officer candidates in order to understand platforms, gauge abilities and represent the student body’s voice. This year’s editorial board has chosen to continue the endorsements. We are endorsing junior Kelly Rapp for student body president on a 5-0-0 vote and Raechel Adams for external vice president on a 5-0-0 vote.

The DREAM Act and its supporters have caused a stir in the melting pot, and it’s time for Baylor to get cooking, too. Student Senate asked the university to take a public stance supporting the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act with a bill passed March 8, and it is indeed time for the university to do so.

I read online that the Baylor Student Senate supports the DREAM Act – a bill that would provide a path to citizenship for young people brought here illegally by their parents before the age of 15. Other criteria include: being of good character, having completed two years of university or military service and having lived in the United States for at least five years.

The Student Senate approved a controversial bill Thursday encouraging the Baylor administration to publicly advocate for providing certain classes of illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship.

The dean for student development defended on Wednesday the department of multicultural affairs’ decision to sponsor the “Hispanic Civil Rights Forum,” a Sept. 21 event that has become the object of criticism in a recently introduced Student Senate bill.
