“I do think it has a great meaning, especially with the history and how it all started,” Chaves said. “I think it’s very nice to experience that in the whole week, and as an international student, I get a sense of home or belonging.”

Much like the rest of the College of Arts and Sciences in October, the Film and Digital Media department is abuzz with classes, screenings and filmmaking. For those in other departments, filmmaking may seem like more fun than it is toil. But even just a five-minute film can take weeks and even months of work, according to Waco senior Avery Ballmann.

With less than 2 weeks until the presidential election, tensions are high across the country. A February 2024 Pew poll found that 65% of Americans are exhausted by politics and 55% are angry when they think about politics.

“While a shelter in Waco may have 15 or 20 people to care for 100 to 200 hundred dogs, the shelter in Guatemala only has about three or four people treating twice the amount of animals,” Cunningham said. “So, the 12 people we are able to bring on this trip, including myself and Mia, really helps alleviate the workers at the shelter too.”

If I had a nickel for every time a seemingly grown, educated man made a weird comment or had a strange excitement or stereotype about me being Latina, Filipina or whichever random race of the week he was trying to guess I was, I’d have a lot of nickels. If I combined those profits with my friends experiences, we’d probably be millionaires.

At a university that identifies itself as Christian, social media posts about Christianity are often akin to performative activism posts. Sharing stories or posts to prove that you are a good Christian is, in fact, decidedly unchristian and only adds to certain stereotypes.

Yes, the power of prayer is very real. Yes, it is important that as a community, we are educated on the issues that could have a monumental impact on our world. However, it is possible to do more. We aren’t asking for a full-tuition write-off, but to provide one panel with little follow through isn’t enough.
