Earlier this summer, owners Phillip and Yvette Helberg decided to go out on a limb by opening a food truck at 420 Franklin Ave. in downtown Waco. As a longtime fan of the stand-alone restaurant, I had to see if the food truck met the same standard.
If you’ve been racking your brain for how to fill up a day (or a few) in Waco, here is the only list you will ever need. From shopping to local music to outdoor adventures, here is the best the city has to offer all in one list.

When a person donates a piece of glass, the journey of this bottle begins in one hand and ends back in another. The bottle’s journey from the Glass4Good bin back to the shelf takes around 30 to 60 days.
Waco Downtown Farmers Market | Jan. 29 | 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. | 500 Washington Ave | This weekly event hosts local vendors, artisans and craftsmen in the heart of downtown Waco, accompanied by live music.
“I encourage anyone who has some sort of passion, if it’s artistic and creative or some other area entirely, just consider going into that and pursuing it,” Mosley said.
2023 is the year of the rabbit, a symbol of hope and prosperity. Given the last two years, the luck of the rabbit is much needed. Thanks to East Market and Goods, the Waco community was able to experience just that.
While neither entrepreneurs envisioned owning a coffee shop as their ‘when I grow up’ trope, they have successfully created a brand that has spread kindness throughout the Waco community.

Four months ago, Houston sophomore Brooklyn Joseph began her hair locking services after doing a favor for a friend. That talent soon turned into a business venture. Joseph’s business offers starter locs, retwists and styling, which has allowed her to make money while in school.
“My favorite part is the interaction between people who buy things from me,” Sartor said. “So when I get to do things like that, it’s when I really get excited about it.”
“I think I would probably die in a corporate job where I’m working 9 to 5, and it’s just not who I am. So I love the aspect that everything’s different every day; no day is going to look the same. And, I don’t know, just seeing that growing up, I feel that totally inspired me and encouraged me to start something like this.”

“It’s more just like, for the joy of doing it, and a lot of my stuff shares the gospel with people,” Bowden said. “So I think that that’s a really big part of it is like, not only am I like selling fun, cute little stickers, but they also each one I make has a message behind it.”
Mission Waco Mission World is a foundation based on Christian teachings to help combat poverty and support the underserved in Waco. Since 1991, the foundation has expanded in having multiple outlets for volunteering.
“I have always been passionate about Baylor and just feeding people,” Horne said. “That’s the destiny that I feel like I need to be.”
Be Kind Coffee is now an official vendor which means they are allowed to cater, have pop-ups and take their truck to different parts of campus.
“Not many college students with businesses have been able to sell their own stuff. So that’s why I wanted to create the market at Common Grounds to give student entrepreneurs a place to sell.”
Freshman Grace Craighead began her small business out of her love for stationery. Her business has grown since August 2021 following online sales and her participation in pop-up shops.
Highlands Ranch, Colo., sophomore Trinity Fay is adding life to the everyday cowboy hat by adding customizations for every occasion.
During Dr Pepper Hour, Student Government hosted an entrepreneur fair to support students in a new way by celebrating small student-run businesses.
“Art is definitely something that I enjoy doing. Regardless of how many customers I get, I would still continue to do this. It’s very fun for me,” Beanie Babe owner Ellie McIntyre said.
Cayleigh’s Creations, a small business run by sophomore Cayleigh Nelson, has become a hit in a mere six months.
On Feb. 10 from 5 – 8 p.m., small businesses on Franklin Avenue will host a Galentine’s day celebration with food trucks, live music and discounts.
