Men's Basketball
Head coach Scott Drew implemented a 1-3-1 zone defense against No. 6 Houston in the wake of a starting center Josh Ojianwuna’s season-ending knee injury. It was a rocky debut, but nevertheless offered some reason for optimism.
The Cougars attempted 15 more shots than the Bears, taking advantage of easy baskets. Houston scored 44 combined second-chance points and points off turnovers.
The first-year starter announced the news Sunday afternoon on his Instagram. He was averaging career-highs in points (7.4 per game), rebounds (6.4) and shooting percentage (77.4%).
Women's Basketball
With nothing to lose, No. 25 Baylor women’s basketball put No. 1 UCLA on the ropes early, but dominant post-play by the Bruins kept them undefeated, taking down the Bears, 72-57, in the inaugural Coretta Scott King Classic Monday afternoon at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
Junior forward Darianna Littlepage-Buggs racked up a game-high 21 points and 20 rebounds, while senior center Aaronette Vonleh added 20 points as Baylor women’s basketball knocked off UNLV, 71-63, Sunday afternoon at Foster Pavilion.
Led by senior forward Sarah Andrews, Baylor basketball went up against Texas Southern. With a dominant performance from Andrews as well as junior forward Darianna Littlepage-Buggs, the Bears took the win 101-29.
Equestrian
Senior rider Andie Pratt got her first horse when she was four years old. Since then, she has become a highly decorated rider who overcame a potentially career-ending condition to stay in the saddle.
There are a lot of riders on the Baylor Equestrian team, but through team bonding exercises and big and little sisters, the team is close-knit.
With the new Go Gold initiative, Baylor Athletics pushes fans to come together to wear gold.
Tennis
Baylor women’s tennis breezed past BYU Friday at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Austin, 4-1, to advance to the championship round against No. 12 Texas.
With a winning pedigree against SMU, an improved doubles team, and strong bonds between teammates, Baylor men’s tennis will look to return to its winning ways at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex in Dallas.
Facing the second top-5 team in three days, Baylor men’s tennis pressured No. 2 TCU to its limit but fell short, 4-1, Monday night in the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
Golf
Junior Rosie Belsham said there’s no doubt in her mind that the Bears “are 100% the best team in the Big 12.”
Freshman Rosie Belsham secured her third-straight top-five finish and helped the Bears place seventh at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
After seeing Ohma play for the entire fall and the early part of the spring, Goble said “the ceiling is pretty endless” in terms of her potential moving forward. The true freshman can get a huge jump on her competition with her long game, but even she admitted her short game has room for growth.
