While the spring Welcome Weekend might be less known than its fall counterpart, it’s a beneficial time for transfers and new students to become established at Baylor, said Dr. Nathan Shelburne, director of New Student Programs.

By the time you get to college, you’ve already heard all the typical advice like ‘don’t bring your whole wardrobe’ or ‘don’t skip class.’ But as the years go on, there are plenty of lessons you learn along the way. Here’s what members of the Editorial Board wish we had known about college.

Baylor events, in my experience, have the tendency to be dismissed as hot, loud and overcrowded gatherings that will in no way add to one’s Baylor experience. While all of these descriptions can make school events seem less appealing, I think attending them significantly adds to the Baylor experience.

What I’ve learned is that it’s OK to envision your dream life, but don’t make the same mistake I did by ignoring some of the more unfavorable bits. For all you soon-to-be Bears, here are some things I suggest considering.

Welcome Week marks the start of the Baylor school year, but a program this large requires a substantial number of volunteers to lead new students, set up events and provide information.

New Student Programs will be accepting applications now until 5 p.m. on March 8.

Tripp Purks, new student programs coordinator, said Welcome Week is a great time for students to serve.

Many school traditions start freshman year at Baylor, such as Line Camp, Welcome Week, learning the stories of the Immortal Ten and running the Baylor Line with a line jersey and slime cap. Some traditions, however, start long before students even think about applying to college. Some Baylor students are born into Baylor families.

Starting this fall, select Welcome Week leaders will continue to journey with and mentor incoming students throughout the semester in a structured format as part of the New Student Experience courses: University 1000, BU 1000, BIC 1212 and ECS First Year Seminar.

This summer Baylor will offer a specialty line camp specifically designed with Honors College members in mind. The new line camp, which is similar to the already established engineering and computer science specialty camp, will overlap with regular summer line camp sessions but will split the honors session students from the rest of the line camp participants.
