While everyone talks about “Sing season” and the excitement surrounding it, that thrill isn’t universal. Students who aren’t in Greek life, who don’t have the connections or inside knowledge often watch from the sidelines, sometimes literally. Sing becomes a celebration for some and a reminder of exclusion for others.

“I think especially for the students and interns that work here, we’re kind of told that we are supposed to be like leaders amongst our peers,” Houston sophomore Tan Green said. “[It’s] kind of to help guide people and help us with teaching moments in leadership.”

Leaving the Judge Baylor statue in place serves as a hateful reminder of Baylor’s past in a place intended to remember the lives of the enslaved people who built the original Independence campus. Allowing the statue to stand in the heart of campus diminishes the value of Baylor’s efforts to create a more diverse and inclusive campus.
A 20-year-old organization at Baylor, the African Student Association aims to connect students of all races with their cultures, working to overcome the challenges its minority members face on campus and beyond.
“It’s really like a big family when you start to get to know the athletes and all of the family members they have, and you just become a part of that group. They all really care about each other and they’re really supportive,” Hoeft said. “It’s a really nice environment to be in.”
The Family Study Space came early this year and the two Parent Rooms established around six to seven years ago upon requests from people in the Baylor community. These rooms now serve undergraduate, graduate, faculty and staff members who are taking care of children and need a space to be with them.
