“This subject is extremely relevant to students and the need to always be aware of your surroundings, whether you are in the dorms, on campus or traveling,” Childers said. “A student’s best defense in staying safe is maintaining a heightened sense of awareness.”

“By the time you are 85 or 90 years old, you will know a lot of women that have had breast cancer, since it happens to one in eight women over the course of a lifetime,” Stern said. “Outside of skin cancer, this statistic makes it the most common cancer for American women.”

Running the Line is one of the most celebrated Baylor traditions for freshmen and new transfer students. The 50-year-old tradition, though, faces new students with challenges like dehydration, heat exhaustion and dog-piling over their fellow classmates.

“The issue is that there are no healthy places,” Kotnani said. “No one will go through a drive-thru and get the healthiest options, including myself sometimes. To help mitigate, we provide recipes for these people to do at home, including ones with ingredients that you might already have.”

“I would posit that most people experience positive improvements in their mental health when there is a break from school or work,” Owusu-Ankomah said. “This can particularly be the case if the person is intentional about practicing positive self-care — such as engaging in mindfulness or connecting with others — throughout the break.”

After noticing increased levels of anxiety, stress and depression in its students last year, the School of Music instituted a health and wellness initiative under the direction of Dr. Lesley McAllister, Professor of Piano and Director of the Keyboard Division.
