Since hiring Spavital this offseason (and moving redshirt junior quarterback Sawyer Robertson into the starting lineup), Baylor’s offense has sped light years ahead of where it was a year ago. Jeff Grimes’ wide zone offense finished No. 101 nationally at 23.1 points per game. In less than a full season on the job, Spavital has the Bears up to No. 23 nationally and second in the Big 12 at 35.1 points per game.
The Bears have scored over 100 points in consecutive games for the first time in the Scott Drew era.
The Bears (3-1) honed in on the defensive side of the ball, where junior forward Bella Fontleroy had a career-high five blocks. Head coach Nicki Collen’s team finished with 23 points off turnovers after forcing 11 steals and swatting away nine shots.

Behind the most rushing yards in a single game in three years, Baylor football snapped an eight-game home losing streak to Big 12 opponents, knocking off Oklahoma State 38-28 on Saturday at McLane Stadium.
From watching Baylor football win a Big 12 Championship on the sidelines to starting in the Bears’ highest-scoring game against a Big 12 opponent under Aranda, Lengyel’s journey has been far from easy. But with a smile on his face, he rode the lows of struggling to find a place on the team to becoming one of the most exciting offensive linemen in the Big 12.
Cross County and Track & Field
The men’s team finished 12th and the women finished 14th.
Seventeen Baylor runners will compete on Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
For Baylor cross country athletes Ryan and Ellie Hodge, their collegiate athletics careers have looked slightly different than most. The pair met after Ellie transferred to Baylor to continue her athletic career, and sparks flew immediately. Fast forward, and they are happily married with a newborn baby girl.
Volleyball
No. 23 Baylor volleyball faced No. 18 TCU Friday night in the Ferrell Center, taking down the Horned Frogs 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-8.
The No. 23 Bears went down to H-town on Wednesday and brought back a 3-1 win against the Cougars, 23-25, 25-16, 25-17 and 25-23. Baylor (12-6, 4-3 Big 12) has won every matchup against Houston since 2002.
Santa Clarita, Calif. sophomore Victoria “Tori” Davis is here to show you really can do it all. Baylor volleyball middle blocker and apparel merchandising major, Davis started in a match against Cincinnati, which the Bears won 3-0, and worked as a fashion stylist in the same week.
Tennis
The Bears pulled out the doubles point but lost four straight singles matches to suffer their second defeat of the season.
No. 14 Baylor men’s tennis will face the No. 1 nationally ranked team in Ohio State at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Hurd Tennis Center.

Soccer
After a challenging week at home in which Baylor soccer took a loss and draw, the Bears are eager to get back in the win column as they host Arizona at 7 p.m. Thursday night at Betty Lou Mays Field.
In the third year under head coach Michelle Lenard, Baylor soccer’s expectations are sky-high, and 90 minutes of strong play is required every night. So when Texas State landed a last-minute goal to prevent a loss for the first time in program history at Betty Lou Mays Field, a tie felt even worse than a loss.
Baylor soccer opened its conference slate against No. 15 Oklahoma State, a team they didn’t play in 2023. After a hard-fought match, the Bears succumbed 1-0 Thursday night at Betty Lou Mays Field.

Pro Sports
Missi was tabbed as the 22nd overall pick in ESPN’s Mock Draft on April 17, while Walter was projected in the lottery at No. 12. Fraschilla said they’re both “prototype NBA players once they physically mature in the next two, three, four [or] five years.”
In the 2023 season, Major League Baseball officials added the pitch clock to aid the speed of the game. After the season and now into 2024, I’ve seen that the pitch clock has been very useful and has accelerated the pace of the game.
