“I’m really looking forward to seeing our grounds full of smiling faces again,” Chavra Ingram, HOT vice president of marketing and sponsorship development, said. “We missed everybody last year and we are just so excited to be open and have everybody come back this year.”

More than 75,000 people went to Austin City Limits Music Festival this weekend, making it one of the state’s first large events since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
“To me, one person by themselves doesn’t make a statement, it’s when they are a group of people that they become the paintings,” artist Ines Alvidres said.
“We wanted to give something back to the community,” ranch hand Quentin Sanchez said. “[A pumpkin patch] bigger and better than what they’re used to, like how we enjoyed as little kids.”
“Just to see the beauty of his creation through something as simple as an indie rock concert,” Mcwhirter said “Whether this turns out to be the biggest concert of the year or just another Common Grounds concert, it is just so cool to see our fraternity come together.”
“Anytime you get people who are of different races, different socioeconomic situations in the same room and they start conversing with each other and looking at art, it’s powerful medicine,” artist Susan Lee Sistrunk said.
Food trucks lined Fountain Mall on Friday for Taste of Waco, a Family Weekend event, which featured local restaurants such as Nightlight Donuts & Coffee, Waco Cha and Xristo’s Cafe.
“At my best I am a humorist, not a comedian. Comedy is fairly easy, while humor is really difficult,” local writer David Mosley said. “Sometimes humor is the strongest protection we have.”
“I hope that my music helps them feel more like themselves, and helps them feel more comfortable being who they were created to be,” singer-songwriter Brendan Abernathy said.
Several thousand fans of all ages came decked out in feather boas, flared pants and colorful sunglasses to see the king of “treating people with kindness,” as the slogan goes.
From cornhole to giant bananagrams and jumbo jenga, the carnival went smoothly and there was something for everyone to enjoy and participate in.
Gypsy Hearts Market debuted Friday at the Waco Convention Center, featuring a range of vendors from Vunkology to P.D.Q.
“It’s vunk, valuable junk. Not just pathetic junk,” Carol Casey, founder of Vunkology said. “No one wants to buy pathetic junk.”
“We’ve been around for about a year now, and we just want to get more involvement with the community, as well as help people try to find some of our after-school programs that we’re going to have this fall,” founder Gabe Garmelo said.
“They would know that if they have any questions about fitness, wellness, self-care, recovery, all of that, then they can meet the people who are actually in charge of those areas,” assistant director of wellness, fitness and nutrition Van Smith-Davis said.
Neighbor Nights are back in person, kicking off with a fitting theme of “Getting to Know Your Neighbor.”
“I’m very excited to have a live audience. I mean, as theater artists, that’s what we love – we love doing live theater,” Olson said. “Overall, we’re taking as many precautions as we can and we’re really excited to have audiences back live and in person.”
“The best part was getting to dance on the dance floor in front of everyone like no one was watching. It was just a really cool event and I loved it,” Katy freshman Zoe Crouch said.
With a population of around 3,000 people, the town of West is seen as a tight-knit community known for its deeply-rooted Czech culture, which tourists can see from its food stops, traditional music shops and long-established clothing stores.
Waco citizens enjoyed an evening of country music, food and fun Saturday night during the Stars and Stripes Music Fest at McLane Stadium.
“It’s important for us to learn about emergencies. Going through these activities can help me because the knowledge is something I can always have with me for the rest of my life, and I can pass it forward to others,” Kelsick said.
“I didn’t even realize how much we missed until I saw the freshmen come in and saw their Welcome Week as opposed to our day and a half last year,” Gilliam said. “Obviously it doesn’t make up for our freshman year, but it makes us feel special.”
Common Grounds halted its open mic night two years ago as the coffee shop went through company transitions. It’s officially back and Waco artists are more eager than ever to perform on the famous backyard stage.
