For florists at Baylor Flowers and Bloomingal’s Floral Boutique, Easter brings an uptick in demand for flowers that embody joy, family gatherings and the fresh start that spring represents. From lilies to tulips, these seasonal staples play a key role in holiday decor and gift giving.

“All Christian traditions can appreciate Easter for what it is, and I think the preparation season is a really good opportunity, for reflection, for connection, for understanding,” Menesses said. “I think that’s something that we should be able to share in and should be encouraged to be a community wide process.”

In 2002, Baylor started extending Easter break to include Good Friday, creating more time in the school calendar for students and faculty to go home, be with their loved ones and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Dr. Burt Burleson, university chaplain and dean of spiritual life, said he began to get more involved in the church in his early adolescent years, when he started to fully understand the meaning of Easter beyond chocolate bunnies and egg hunts.

Throughout the 40-day period, those who observe practice serving alms and self-discipline on multiple occasions — something other Christians could learn from partaking in as well. Lent is not a “Catholics-only” season; it is a tradition people of any denomination can learn from as well.
