It might be easy to immerse yourself in your part-time job or wish the next three months away in eager anticipation for the fall, but summer is the perfect time to build habits, not break them. So, if you’re looking for some extra ways to fill your summer calendar, here are some suggestions.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not immune to this feeling, and neither are 75% of people. But I have implemented some more positive ways of thinking that have completely changed my perspective. The first step? Realizing comparison is the thief of joy.

All in all, exploring new places such as the United Kingdom has opened my eyes to the beauty of cultural norms and lifestyle choices other than our own and has left me with a newfound appreciation for them. There is truly something so special about watching firsthand the ins and outs of a different culture. I wish that everyone could have this same opportunity, so that they too might learn to find beauty in a culture and lifestyle other than their own.

As we watch Sing next year, I challenge us to revisit our expectations. Ask yourself what is entertaining and what is excellent, and why you believe an act fits in either category (or both). I don’t think it’s a coincidence all six of the people’s choice awards from this year went to all-women’s acts.

And just like that, recruitment week is finally over. After anticipating this week all of last semester, you may have just experienced the best week of your life or the most exhausting week of your life. Either way, I encourage you to see the spring semester as one full of new opportunities and new beginnings.

This select group of Instagram users and celebrities, whether they realized it or not, robbed young girls of the innate joy that comes with sharing their excitement with the world and proudly loving every part of themselves. It is up to us, as young women, to take back that stolen joy.
