Fresh off of a 71-7 homecoming dismantling of Iowa State, No. 8 Baylor (6-0, 3-0) looks to get its seventh straight win against the Kansas Jayhawks (2-4, 0-3) in Lawrence on Saturday.
After losing four of its first five matches to start Big 12 play, Baylor won its second conference match of the season on Wednesday night against Kansas State. This was the first home conference win of the season for Baylor after losing its first four home match. The Bears won 3-1 overall, 18-25, 29-27, 25-20, 25-20. With the win, Baylor moves to 10-13 on the season and 2-5 in conference play. Kansas State falls to 14-6 on the season and 2-5 in conference play.
It was only a year ago when fans called for the firing of Baylor’s defensive coordinator Phil Bennett, as he faced constant scrutiny. The defense left a lot to be desired after giving up more than 519 yards per game through the first nine games of 2012.
Nov. 17, 2012, everything changed.
Baylor volleyball will look to rebound from its 1-5 start in Big 12 play tonight against conference rival Kansas State. The Bears are losers of two straight against Texas Christian and Oklahoma, and sit at an overall record of 9-13. Kansas State comes into the match with a record of 14-5 and 2-4 in the Big 12.
With all of the firepower of Baylor football, it’s no surprise a valuable weapon has slipped through the cracks. Junior wide receiver Clay Fuller may be sensationalized. There’s no doubt in his teammates minds, Fuller is one of the leaders of this team.
Flashback to Sept. 29, 2012: Baylor had just put up 581 passing yards, 700 yards of total offense and 63 points against No. 9 West Virginia… and lost.
In that game, the Baylor defense allowed West Virginia to pass for an astounding 656 yards and finish with 807 yards of total offense.
“We’re going bowling,” senior wide receive Tevin Reese yelled repeatedly while running up and down the sideline, celebrating the Bears clinching bowl eligibility for the fourth season in a row. In previous years, this would have been a big deal. Not this year.
Only after a tough overtime win against Texas Tech in the 11th game of the season did Baylor clinch a bowl berth last season.
It was a heartbreaking weekend for Baylor soccer (8-5-3, 1-4-1) as it added two more tallies to the loss column after falling 1-0 against Iowa State in overtime on Friday and 2-0 against Kansas on Sunday.
Baylor played sound soccer this weekend, but came up short on the road in two tough matches.
