Junior quarterback DJ Lagway is not expected to play in Baylor’s week two matchup against Prairie View A&M, per a report from On3’s Pete Nakos. Junior quarterback Nate Bennett is set to make his first start for the Bears as a result.

Lagway suffered a high-ankle sprain early in the Bears’ season opener against Auburn, playing with a cast and tape on his right ankle.

According to head coach Dave Aranda, Lagway was initially expected to suit up for Baylor’s home opener, but his status was still up in the air.

“He’ll go through the walk-through,” Aranda said in his Monday press conference. “We’ll see after today how Tuesday looks and Wednesday … If we get from day-to-day this week, we want to play him.”

Lagway threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns in the Aflac Kickoff Game, despite being able to only put pressure on his left ankle.

Bennett has played in only four games over the last two seasons. He appeared in three games in 2024 as a freshman, going 1-for-2 on passing attempts with 19 yards. His only action in 2025 came at the end of Baylor’s week three victory over Samford in 2025, completing five passes for 34 yards.

There is also a chance that sophomore quarterback Edward Griffin sees some playing time on Saturday. Aranda has trust in both his backups despite their lack of playing experience.

“I feel really good about Nate and Ed,” Aranda said on Monday. “We have guys that have been here and have invested and know the offense.”

The Bears will face off against Prairie View A&M at 7 p.m. Saturday at McLane Stadium.
