Nate Bennett’s first start in Baylor’s home opener.

Junior quarterback Nate Bennett led Baylor to a 44-3 victory Saturday against Prairie View A&M in his first career start in place of injured junior quarterback DJ Lagway.

“I thought real confident dude, and his attention to detail and routine throughout the week, I thought, couldn’t be any better,” Baylor head coach Dave Aranda said.

Bennett posted career highs in 23 completions on 35 attempts and 301 passing yards. He threw two touchdowns and added another score with a 17-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter.

Fifth-year wide receiver Jayden McGowan also made his first career start at Baylor after a season-long injury last year. Bennett’s first passing touchdown, a 33-yard heave, was to McGowan.

“I work with Nate a lot, so being able to see him put in all this work, even though he’s been going with the second group because of DJ, he’s been working just as hard,” McGowan said. “He’s been preparing like a starter, and it’s so nice to see him finally get him a passing touchdown.”

Aranda confirmed that the Baylor fans should know by Tuesday if Lagway will be back in the game or if Bennett will get another starting opportunity next week against Louisiana Tech.
