When a scooter is reported stolen, officers enter its information into state and national databases. If another agency, such as the Waco Police Department, recovers the device and runs the serial number, it will appear as stolen and can be returned to the owner.

“BUPD encourages students and others to securely lock motorized scooters and bicycles with a U-lock in well-lit locations that generally have a lot of people around. It’s also advisable to check on a locked scooter or bike regularly,” Fogleman wrote in an email.

Clayton, Calif. junior Ben Williamson said he is concerned about the lack of public safety in neighborhoods surrounding Baylor. Williamson said even a small boost in security could potentially lessen crime in the areas that students inhabit.

The Baylor Police Department is currently investigating five scooter thefts that took place on and around campus in the last month. The thefts took place between Feb. 27 and March 23, and assistant chief of BUPD Don Rodman said that among these five thefts, there have been few commonalities or linking traits.
