Baylor’s Homecoming Parade is one of the university’s oldest and most beloved traditions. Every year, thousands of students, alumni and families line the streets of Waco to cheer on the floats that pass by. But behind the finished products lie months of hard work and dedication that many never see.

Win or lose, each organization’s float represents hours of hard work, creativity and collaboration on the part of Greek life members. As they carve their annual path around campus on homecoming, those who have put in the work express feelings of fulfillment and familial pride.
Whether you’re drawn to the fun of the fraternity floats, the intensity of the bonfire, the stakes of the football game, or the high-energy Pigskin Revue, your favorite Baylor Homecoming tradition might just reveal a lot about you.
Although the floats appear to roll down Fifth Street with ease during the homecoming parade, there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. Over the course of months, many hours of hard work go into the construction of the floats before they are finally presented to the public on the Saturday morning of homecoming weekend.
It’s no secret that the Baylor Chamber of Commerce facilitates most of the preparation for homecoming weekend. However, most students don’t see their long days and hard work. Representatives from Chamber shed light on the process.
While tradition can feel cheesy even to the biggest of Baylor Bears, I would never call Baylor Homecoming “overhyped.”
Hard work and long hours are necessary to continue the annual tradition of the floats of the homecoming parade, which first began to appear in the parade in the 1920s.
Baylor’s Chamber of Commerce is tasked with organizing homecoming and all of the details that are involved, including floats.
“We work with all the fraternities and sororities who have a float, and we coordinate with them in different risk management policies,” said Fort Worth senior Brent Pollard, a float chair for chamber. “We are the middle man between them and risk management. We give them the information on judging.”
