Welch said for her, raising awareness is so important because trafficking can happen to anyone. With I-35 so close to campus and college students being a prime age for trafficking, Welch said Waco is just as unsafe as any other city, and so is Baylor.

On March 16, 2022, Sophy, a Baylor student who asked we not use her last name, was in the middle of a work shift in Harrington House taking out the trash when the professor she was working for told her she noticed that a man stood behind her for a moment and then walked away.
In 1987, Baylor began the first college Habitat for Humanity chapter. During COVID-19, the chapter’s impact was stunted for two years, however this year the volunteers were able to engage with the community and assist in building houses around Waco.

“The suspension bridge and the Indian Spring Park area, has long been one of our traditional areas for community events,” Cook said. “People are excited to finally have the bridge back open and have this again as one of our gathering spots to come together.”

“I will do my very best to represent Baylor well,” Johnson said. “I see it as my responsibility to take — just like as a diplomat, I took the American flag where I went — I look forward to taking the Baylor name and its reputation to places that it has not been before.”
Philbrick said if students want to apply, the application process is really easy and takes around 10 minutes for them to complete it. Most students at Baylor should have already used the housing portal entering their freshman year, he said.
Dr. Karynecia Conner, GSA’s diversity chair, said she organized the gala with the intention to shine a light on what Baylor is able to do for diversity in its research. In her speech, she said researchers should seek research topics as a means of ministry.
“Every semester … whatever area it is, they grow in confidence, and they realize, ‘Oh, I can do this. God has gifted me, and this is what I love doing,’” Horton said. “That initial call — it’s like, you’ve got these little little flames, but it just grows when they’re doing the internship.”
Mount Carmel has seen visitors from all over the United States and across the globe, including the Netherlands, Canada, Australia and Northern Ireland. According to Charles Pace, the current leader of the Branch community at Mount Carmel, the 77-acre plot of land gets around 200 visitors per week, with a jump to about 1,000 visitors on the day of former President Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Waco.
Other schools across Texas, such as Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas A&M in College Station, Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth and Collin College in Plano all dealt with similar active shooter hoaxes on Thursday.
Wednesday marks the 30th anniversary of the Waco Siege and Cook said although the incident may have left a black mark on Waco, Baylor has brought a beacon of light to the area.
