After spending the ENTIRE weekend studying for that test, exhausting your brain power for one specific course, and the professor assigns a quiz for the very next class meeting, why wouldn’t you be upset? Many students work hard throughout college to fight for a good GPA when they graduate. The only problem is some professors might not have those students’ best interests in mind. When professors give a quiz the day after a test, students’ grades and motivation plummet. Testing is an essential part of a college education in order to make sure students retain the information they are studying.…

Church today is becoming overrated. I’m sure everyone has had, or knows of, that one Christian friend that was never free on the weekends. Or maybe you were that friend. I know I was. A devoted churchgoer’s weekend may generally look like this: Friday: worship service, fellowship Saturday: prayer meeting, fellowship Sunday: worship service, fellowship Despite the fact that each day of this schedule seems to be analogous to the other, missing one day makes a great difference. So what’s the big deal? A churchgoer’s community will be the church. Some members of the congregation become your friends, and attending…

In light of the Pope’s recent visit to the U.S., Baylor president and chancellor Ken Starr wrote a guest column for USA Today concerning international religious freedom. “We are witnessing a tragic, global crisis in religious freedom — one characterized outside the West by persecution, violence and terrorism, and inside the West by a receding understanding of why religious liberty is necessary for human and social flourishing,” he wrote. Starr directed his words both at the Pope and the American people. Starr is correct on the issue of religious freedom, not only as a founding principle for this country, but…

By Haley Morrison, reporter Black Gospel music was created to sustain both the singers and listeners, to give life and hope when times were hard. While the listeners survived with the help of music, very few of the songs did. Associated journalism professor Robert Darden and the Baylor Libraries are trying to fix that. Years ago, Darden began trying to recover Black Gospel music with the help of the Baylor Libraries. Together, they search for Black Gospel music and restore the findings, which are then added to the Baylor digital collections. “I’ll do an interview and people will hear about…

Early in September, several Toronto public colleges including University of Toronto, Ryerson University and York University found outrage over a flood of fliers posted promoting the new organization of a “White Students Union.” The posters boasted two young white men standing with Toronto’s CN Tower urging onlookers to visit their website, “Students for Western Civilization.” The club is designed, according to its website, to oppose “cultural Marxism.” “Students are taught that all of Western Civilization is inherently ‘racist’ and that Western countries are plagued by a ‘systemic and institutionalized’ racism which reinforces a ‘system of white supremacy,’” states an editorial…

We’ve all been there: Looking up the roster before the first day of class and scouring the list for a familiar name. Even an acquaintance would do for the sake of bringing up how you know each other by x-amount degrees of separation. But there comes a day when you scroll past the “Z’s,” and you might as well have seen John Doe appear futher down the list. Your first-day-of-class excitement is shifting to battlefield-level strategies of arrival times and seat placement. Here’s the thing: Class Friends are the best friends. The singular best thing about having a class with…

In an age where everything is electronic and online, or at least moving toward it, we move away from the more conventional way of doing things. We choose Netflix over going to the movie theater, e-readers instead of hardback books and streaming music instead of buying CDs and records. It really makes one wonder, “Will these things soon be whisked away and forgotten? Will we be telling our grandchildren how we used to go out to watch a movie?” Or will we be trying to describe that new book smell? I don’t think so. In fact, I think they will…

For students looking to expand their college experience to other campuses, Baylor Study Abroad provides group semester, exchange, affiliate and faculty-led programs across the globe. Now is the season to attend information meetings and begin applications. Lexi English, coordinator of semester abroad programs, said students interested in study abroad should first talk to their academic adviser and get their passports early. Available class credit is a large aspect of the decision on a program. One smart tactic is to plan to take general education classes and electives while studying abroad. “We want to get you in an area that you’re…

I have always considered myself a Waco resident first and a Baylor student second. I am offended by remarks made in an article [“Wacoans Express Frustration Toward Students” published in Sept. 15 issue] regarding citizens concerns of Baylor students. I have spent hours working with fellow residents — mentoring their children, volunteering in their hospitals and have helped build homes for their families in need. I did this because I felt it was my civic duty as a resident to dig my roots down deep into the Waco soil. I am proud to say I live in Waco. After I…

I am writing today to let you know that I, along with a number of my peers, felt the image of Baylor University was tarnished in an article [run Sept. 15]  entitled “Wacoans Express Frustration Toward Students.” As a university publication written by and for the students, it is hard to believe that such a controversial story would pass through the newsroom without falling into gentler hands. Given recent events, it does not seem wise to bring a month-old story of grievances to the front fold of The Lariat. In this column, a local resident was quoted saying: “They do…

As a professional commercial photographer for the past five years for an established company in Fort Worth, I have seen a lot of things I have liked and disliked. Here are five guaranteed ways to annoy any working photographer. 1. What we at work call the “over the shoulder shot.” This applies the most when an organization has contracted us to bring our studio with lights and a backdrop to photograph an event, and people stand right over the camera with their camera to take the photo at the same time. People argue, “Well, that’s my kid, dog, cat, whatever,…
