Baylor’s online summer school added four new programs for students to take in 2016. Last summer marked the first time online courses were offered to undergraduate students. Until then, they were only available for graduate programs. Arts and sciences summer courses The first round of the pilot program for arts and science courses filled up in two days of being posted. The College of Arts and Sciences will increase the spots from 100 to 240, said Dr. Blake Burleson, associate dean of undergraduate studies. “It’s a way to help students catch up and stay ahead,” Burleson said. The program ran…

How concerned should Baylor fans be about Seth Russell’s injury? Well, it’s always bad when the starting quarterback goes down. He is the starter for a reason. He also has the reps, rapport and timing down with the offensive weapons. That is something a backup simply doesn’t have, by no fault of his own. I do not, however, think Baylor fans should press the panic button quite yet. Art Briles is a masterful coach and he is prepared every year for a situation like this. Jarrett Stidham is the next man up at quarterback for Baylor. The true freshman was…
Freshman forward Lauren Piercy was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Tuesday for the second time this season. Piercy was on fire Sunday against Texas where she scored the game winner, beating the Longhorns 2-1. This sets a record for the Bears, earning them a 5th weekly award. The Bears have been on a role this year. Since the program started in 1996, Baylor has earned 10 Newcomer of the Weeks honors. “It’s not a team of individual superstars, it is a team,” said head coach Paul Jobson. “You can be down two players and still beat a top…
The AFC East might just be the best division in football right now. Which is a far cry from how this division has operated the past decade. As great as the New England Patriots have played since Tom Brady and Bill Belichick got together, the rest of the division has been mostly subpar. This division, however, made a huge overall jump in 2015. Many analysts expected the AFC East to be competitive this year, so I’m not exactly being a clairvoyant for saying I believe this division is the best. However, after the slow start Miami made, the defensive turnover…
Baylor football is blazing a trail it have never blazed before. So far this season, the Bears have reached the No. 2 ranking in the country, maintained the best active home winning streak in the country, are frontrunners to achieve a third-straight Big 12 title and are looking at a very legitimate chance at getting into the College Football Playoff. Additionally, the Bears’ on-field product is looking like the best its ever been. Junior receiver Corey Coleman is in consideration for the Heisman Trophy, the Bears’ offense leads the country and the “Gang Green” defense can’t stop forcing turnovers. When…
On Saturday, my friends and I made the wet voyage to McLane Stadium to watch our No. 2 ranked Baylor Bears take on the Iowa State Cyclones. The entire game, even the second half, was a blast back down memory lane. I kept having flashbacks from my freshman year, when I stood on the front row of Floyd Casey Stadium as Baylor overcame the Heisman Hangover by smashing No. 1 ranked KSU 52-24. Then it hit me. Although this was an amazing homecoming game for a senior, the fact that I was even able to make my way down to…
Baylor volleyball’s Big 12 season is slowly slipping away after Iowa State defeated the Bears in straight sets Sunday at the Ferrell Center (19-25, 21-25, 22-25). The Bears, who were trying to rebound at home after a five-set loss on the road to TCU last Wednesday, fell short when the Cyclones came out attacking. “We have had time to recover from it,” said sophomore outside hitter Katie Staiger. “We honestly played all out defense in our last match against TCU. We would have loved to pull that one out, but we can’t let games string together. Each game is a…

By Meghan Mitchell, Reporter With one match postponed due to bad weather, Baylor soccer shifted its focus to one game over the weekend. Baylor beat Texas 2-1 Sunday at Myers Stadium. The Bears (9-5-2, 4-1-1 Big 12) traveled to Austin to take on the tough Longhorn (7-5-4, 4-3-1 Big 12) team. Even though the Bears led in shot attempts (6-4) and shots on goal (3-1) both teams remained scoreless through the first half. Coming back from the halftime, the Bears endured the poor field condition at Myers Stadium. The game looked set for a 0-0 tie. That changed in three…

By Katie Grovatt, ReporterTourist are expected to flood into Waco on Halloween Weekend as Magnolia Market is having it’s grand opening at the downtown silos. The city has estimated that this event will attract almost as many out of town people as Baylor Game Days. “Magnolia is estimating in the neighborhood of 5,000 people per Saturday, I’m sure there will be Saturdays that are fewer than that, but we’re talking about maybe 10,000 people a week,” said Megan Henderson, Executive Director at the Downtown Development Corporation. Dori Helm, Communications manager for the city of Waco, said that due to the…
Two and a half years ago, Central Texas changed forever. The West Fertilizer Co. building exploded on April 17, 2013, killing 15 people, injuring more than 160 and destroying dozens of buildings in the vicinity. In the aftermath of the case, seven civil lawsuits were filed for damages in the deaths and injuries of these citizens. The first of these settled out of court on Oct. 11, but two rounds of cases are still pending for 2016. While civil cases are a tool for families to receive a financial compensation for their loved ones, the state of Texas and federal…
By Eric Vining, ContributorWith an increasing number of shootings at colleges and universities across the United States, university administrators and officials across the country are working harder than ever to make sure their students, faculty and staff remain safe on college campuses. Some of the most notable events have occured in recent weeks at Umpqya Community College in Roseburg, Ore., and Texas Southern University in Houston.Baylor is no exception, and administrative officials constantly improve plans already in place to take care of such emergency situations.“We’re constantly evaluating, assessing, re-assessing and implementing counter-shooter strategies,” said Mark Childers, associate vice president for…
[In response to “Not interested? Then don’t give him your digits”, published Oct. 21 and written by a dear friend whom I have known for several years, Thomas Mott.] I am approaching this piece with an open mind, knowing it may not be well-received by some — particularly men — as Mott’s piece was ill-reviewed by women. In his article, Mott talks about the hurtful impact of a girl giving a guy her number, but never responding when he texts her. Mott continues by offering a solution: Don’t give a guy your number if you are uninterested. I’m not going…
Planning a whole weekend can be overwhelming as families often expect their students to know Waco and take the lead. Here are some suggestions for a day in the life of a cultured Wacoan:
In “Not Interested? Then Don’t Give Him Your Digits,” [published Oct. 21] Thomas Mott told women he would prefer if they were blunt with men. In that spirit, perhaps he will appreciate this analysis: Mr. Mott’s opinions are ill-informed and sexist. It seems he has made the unfortunately common mistake of pontificating on why women behave certain ways while failing to consult women. While women have made great strides in our society, many women (including myself) have found that we cannot tell a man “no” without fear of consequences. If women are too nice, as Mr. Mott claims, it’s because…
The city of Waco has new building plans to renovate the Humane Society of Central Texas. The plans are part of the initiative to make Waco a no-kill city, or one that does not need to euthanize animals. The project is a $2.5 million job and includes much larger and roomier kennels, a veterinary clinic, a remodeled cat room and an exclusive puppy house. Boerne sophomore Nicole Cutler used to spend much of her time volunteering at the old shelter. As she began to notice how quickly the shelter would fill up and how many animals never found homes, she…

Baylor soccer is back on the road after beating Oklahoma and tying with the No. 17-ranked Texas Tech team at home last weekend. “It was a really physical weekend for sure,” said head coach Paul Jobson. “We got a little banged up.” “Two game weekends are tough, but the reality is, that’s normal. That’s what we are usually doing,” Jobson said. “I think the physicality of the two games were probably tougher than the fact that we are playing two games. It’s something most of these girls are used to. We were fortunate to have a few weeks where we…
Although the Baylor homecoming parade has been canceled due to weather conditions, the creative, extravagant and quirky floats will be judged at their regular time as tradition prevails.
Many students fell in love with Lady and Joy on their first visit to campus, but otherwise, Baylor University’s live mascots are an oft-forgotten part of regular campus life. In the midst of Homecoming and a week of traditions, it’s time to reveal the truly unique history of the Baylor bears—the furry, four-legged ones.
To escape from the elements and feast your eyes on art, wander into the Creative Art Studio and Theater during what would have been the duration of the Homecoming Parade.
By Stephen Nunnelee, VideographerI’ve heard all the typical stereotypes about Baylor, everything from “just a bunch of rich kids” to “poor kids at Baylor can’t have any fun.” I have to tell the truth: Before coming to Baylor, I had my own reservations about what I was getting myself into. Gratefully, all my fears and negative assumptions about this school were quickly dissolved. I was immediately showered with positivity and support from complete strangers, and I truly can say I would not be graduating this May without the wonderful staff and students of Baylor. But what if this is not…
