The declining importance of religious freedom and civic education in society is a reflection of the decline of society as a whole. This was the underlying message from Os Guinness, author and social critic, during his On Topic session with President Ken Starr Tuesday night.

Guinness has authored and edited more than 30 books, worked as a freelance reporter with the BBC and served as executive director of The Williamsburg Charter Foundation. This foundation’s focus is celebrating the First Amendment, a passion clearly shared by Guinness as displayed during his discussion with Starr.

U.S. Distinguished Sen. George J. Mitchell (Maine 1980-95) wowed a packed house in Waco Hall on Tuesday night with the discussion of his involvement and insights on conflicts in Northern Ireland and throughout the Middle East.

President Ken Starr and Mitchell began the conversation by remembering Monday’s atrocities in Boston, and the lives of those whom were lost, including the young Martin Richard. During the Boston Marathon on Monday, two bombs exploded close to the finish line, injuring more than 100 people and killing three.

President Ken Starr will host this semester’s On Topic session with former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell at 7 p.m. today in Waco Hall.

Admission to tonight’s event is free and open to all faculty, students and members of the community, though a ticket is required. Waco Hall has a seating capacity of 2,200 and tickets for tonight’s event became available March 18. Those who plan to attend should pick up a ticket today at the Waco Hall box office beginning at 2 p.m.
