The Baylor men’s basketball team was dead in the water only a few weeks ago. Even head coach Scott Drew, the eternal optimist, could not find a team that managed to make the NCAA Tournament after that poor a start. But after Baylor’s (20-10, 8-9) big time 74-61 win against No. 16 Iowa State (22-7, 10-7) in Waco, it may be impossible to leave the Bears out of March Madness.

The Lady Bears won their fourth straight regular season conference title after beating the Iowa State Cyclones 70-54 Tuesday night in Ames, Iowa. The title is shared with No. 7 West Virginia. It is only the Mountaineers’ second year in the Big 12 conference, and they are already sharing the title with one of the most elite college programs in women’s basketball today.

The Lady Bears had the ball and a one-point lead with just over 30 seconds left against West Virginia on Sunday. The Big 12 regular season title was within reach. Coming off a timeout, both teams had the words of their coaches ringing in their ears and understood their responsibilities for the wild finish the game was bound to have.

Coming off of a 3-0 sweep at Kansas, Baylor needed to show something to salvage this season at home against Iowa State. Unfortunately, the Bears were unable to find the winning formula as Iowa State (14-6, 8-2) overpowered Baylor (11-15, 3-7) in straight sets: 25-16, 25-16, 25-16.

“We’re going bowling,” senior wide receive Tevin Reese yelled repeatedly while running up and down the sideline, celebrating the Bears clinching bowl eligibility for the fourth season in a row. In previous years, this would have been a big deal. Not this year.

Only after a tough overtime win against Texas Tech in the 11th game of the season did Baylor clinch a bowl berth last season.

The Baylor Bears are 6-0 for the first time since 1980 and are also bowl eligible for a fourth straight season thanks to a dominating 71-7 victory over Iowa State on Saturday night at Floyd Casey Stadium.

Baylor soccer lost a heartbreaker 1-0 to Iowa State after conceding a goal in the last 23 seconds of the first overtime on Friday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames, Iowa.

“We knew coming in that [Iowa State] was a tough team,” Baylor co-head coach Paul Jobson said. “They are battlers and their goalie made some fantastic saves. There was no question with our fight, heart and ability to play tonight. We just couldn’t break the frame of the goal.”

With Oklahoma losing last week in the Red River Rivalry, Baylor moved up to 12th in the country in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls, which is the highest the Bears have been since 1991. For the first time in the 16-year history of the Big 12, Baylor is the highest ranked team in the conference.

The Baylor Bears will look to prove they belong at the front of the pack as they play Iowa State in the final homecoming game at Floyd Casey Stadium.

The No. 16 Baylor softball team (29-7, 3-2 Big 12) swept the series against Iowa State (14-19, 0-3 Big 12) with a 7-5 win Saturday at Getterman Stadium. The Lady Bears trailed throughout the game but broke away in the sixth inning by scoring three runs.

It was day to remember for senior center fielder Kathy Shelton and junior left-handed pitcher Whitney Canion who both broke school records to lead Baylor to a sweep over Iowa State during Friday’s double-header.

“Two storied players right there that Baylor fans will remember for a long time and to be able to set those records on the same day is pretty special,” head coach Glenn Moore said.

The Baylor Bears lost to the Iowa State Cyclones 87-82 Wednesday at the Ferrell Center on a night where the Cyclones made 11 three-pointers to sink the Bears. Jackson led the Bears in scoring with 30.

“This is a tough loss for us,” Baylor head coach Scott Drew said. “Iowa State shot 54 percent from the field. That and our 55 percent from the free throw line was the difference in the game. 82 points is enough points to win, but the other team shoots 54 percent and scores 87. Defensively tonight, that was disappointing.”

The Baylor Bears and Iowa State Cyclones are locked in a fast-paced shootout so far tonight at the Ferrell Center. At the half, Iowa State leads 41-36 over the Bears.

The contest started out with senior point guard Pierre Jackson playing with revenge on his mind after he posted just seven points against Kansas State.

The Baylor Bears will host the Iowa State Cyclones at 8 p.m. today in the Ferrell Center in a crucial Big 12 Conference match up. With both teams knotted at 7-5 in conference, this single game could determine seeding in the Big 12 tournament and eventually in the NCAA tournament.

“Every home game is so critical, especially at this time of the year in the Big 12,” Baylor head coach Scott Drew said. “We’ve won two out of our last three and we need to keep that momentum going.”
