“Student staff do not have carte-blanche access to every space in a residence hall,” Engblom said. “The average CL or faculty member couldn’t just swipe into every single room. We don’t grant [access] to everybody.”

According to the Annual Fire Safety and Security Report, which Baylor is required to publish annually on Oct. 1 as a result of the Clery Act, 25 sex offenses were reported on the main campus in 2019. In 2021, 30 offenses were reported — a 20% increase in two years.

Now, students with living accommodations not only have access to a detailed website regarding what the accommodation process entails, but also have the opportunity to participate in roommate matching. If a student with living accommodations is registered for housing by May 1, they will be able to select a roommate in the same process every other student living on campus uses.

While most Bears go off to have their own adventures during spring break, North Russell Residence Hall residents stick together for their travels. This year, Baylor and Beyond, the living learning community at North Russell, will travel to the east coast for a week in New York City.

Throughout his years at Brooks, Sriram said he and his wife have had enlightening conversations with residents on deep topics such as relationships and marriage. By interacting with the students on this level, Sriram said he and his family serve as a sort of second family for many students.

One of them advocated for CL requirements to no longer hinge on the need for a candidate to be a Christian since students of all faiths are in need of the financial assistance the CL scholarship offers.

While safety may be a concern for students on campus late at night, Campus Living & Learning provides a free shuttle service from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. for all on-campus residents. The shuttle is a golf cart driven by one of six safety and security education officers.
