Baylor baseball has been on a bit of a rough stretch over the last few weeks. The Bears picked up just one win in the 12 games leading up to their Big 12 home opener against West Virginia this weekend at Baylor Ballpark.

The first day of spring brought cloudy skies and rain to the Waco area, but head coach Art Briles and the reigning two-time Big 12 champion Baylor football team didn’t let the weather bother them as the Bears played their spring scrimmage Friday night at McLane Stadium.

The No. 5 Lady Bears easily handled 15-seed Northwestern State Friday afternoon at the Ferrell Center by a score of 77-36. Baylor switched on the cruise control after jumping out to an early double-digit lead over the Lady Demons.

Waco will play host to just a fraction of the madness to ensue in college basketball across the country. For the second-straight year, the Ferrell Center will be a venue for games of the first and second round of the NCAA tournament.

Baylor seemed to have it. The game was a little close for comfort throughout, but Baylor held a two-point lead with its best free-throw shooter at the line. Senior guard Kenny Chery stepped up for a one-and-one opportunity, 15 seconds remaining, his Baylor career on the line. As he had done 186 times before in his Baylor career, he went through his motions and shot a free throw. It ricocheted off the back iron.
