Classes such as biology and world history truly have important values to be gained by students, but at what point do differentiating DNA from RNA and memorizing the Treaty of Utrecht overshadow learning basic life skills?
With a fan base in the millions, the critically acclaimed original is placed on an exceptionally high pedestal for its world building, original music, redemption arcs and so much more. However, this should not be the same standard for other renditions of the story.
As we watch Sing next year, I challenge us to revisit our expectations. Ask yourself what is entertaining and what is excellent, and why you believe an act fits in either category (or both). I don’t think it’s a coincidence all six of the people’s choice awards from this year went to all-women’s acts.
Like any and all heritage months, Women’s History Month gets the same criticism. People often express the idea that Women’s History Month excludes men, but it’s time we realized that this month is for all of us — an opportunity to reflect on our history and grow from it together.
My heart shattered when I read the news about Laken Riley. Her murder was the first homicide on the University of Georgia campus in almost 30 years, and it should serve as a humbling reminder that it can happen anywhere. The twists and turns of Cameron Park and the Bear Trail are certainly not much different terrain.
The show itself is only the tip of the iceberg. What it took to get to the top of that mountain is the real story — and the one that nobody sees. If you do it right, your soul is connected to your act in the end, and it should be.
I can say from having just a semester and a half under my belt that morning classes are where it’s at. Not only are you finished by lunchtime, but you have the rest of the day at your disposal to do whatever your heart desires.
There’s only so much preparation a student can do to help their experience with the process. Perhaps it’s time to give registration itself some attention. After all, what’s the harm in adding a handful of seats to classes and giving upperclassmen first dibs on Bearweb?
