When the stakes were highest, Baylor softball delivered. They were underdogs heading into the series, but calmly stepped up to take both games from No. 4 Georgia to advance to the Women’s College World Series for the first time since 2011.

After finishing second in the Big 12, with a record of 42-13, Baylor softball earned the right to host the NCAA Regionals round of the softball NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009. The No. 13-seeded Bears will host Northwestern State, Houston and Tulsa over May 16-18 at Getterman Stadium.

He’s been the backbone of Baylor success this season. He’s bailed out his team 16 times on 17 save chances, and yet, it was only his first season as the closer in his entire career. It was a near perfect season for senior closer Josh Michalec. Baylor head coach Steve Smith said the numbers speak for themselves in terms of how effective Michalec was in 2014.

It’s the home stretch for Baylor baseball. This season has brought some ups and lot of downs for the Bears, but there is still a flame of hope burning for this ball club. At this point, the Bears have their eyes focused on just one goal, to qualify for the Big 12 tournament.

When senior left-hander Whitney Canion is on her game, there are few hitters in all of college softball that can hope to hit off of her. McNeese State’s lineup learned that the hard way, as Canion threw her fifth no-hitter and second seven-inning no-hitter of her career on Wednesday at Getterman Stadium.

When it comes to fielding, the shortstop is often considered to be the most important position on a softball field. The shortstop is expected to cover more ground and make more split second plays than arguably any other position on the diamond.

The Bears were able to use early offense to their advantage, scoring seven runs through three innings in a decisive 7-1 victory over the visiting North Texas Mean Green Tuesday at Getterman Stadium.

For the first time since 2009, Baylor baseball was swept at home by a Big 12 rival. The Bears hung in the balance late in games one and three, but the Kansas Jayhawks’ offense thumped a lethal strike to Baylor’s Big 12 championship hopes over the weekend by earning a three-game road sweep.

After losing both games of a double-header to No. 16 Louisiana last Tuesday, Baylor softball needed a strong weekend showing to stay alive in the Big 12 standings.

Sophomore designated player Linsey Hays really wanted a hit. She came up to bat in a tie game in the bottom of the seventh inning with an out on the board and extra innings threatening. She had Baylor’s only other RBI, a double down the left field line in the second inning to score sophomore third baseman Sarah Smith, and her demeanor told us she wanted another.

Sometimes, all you need is a spark. Coming off of a dominant 7-1 win against UTSA on Wednesday, it seemed as though the Baylor bats finally came to life once again.

After playing non-conference games, No. 14 Baylor softball looks to re-enter Big 12 conference play with a home weekend series against Kansas on today, Saturday and Sunday.

The Bears’ pitching lineup has been tested this season. The talk of its quality and grit have been put to the test. Injuries have plagued the pitching staff in 2014, but they have overcome the obstacles for now, thanks to recent heroics from freshman left-handed pitcher Daniel Castano.

Baylor baseball hit another bump in the road this week at Texas State. After picking up a 4-3 win Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark, the Bears failed to complete the series sweep, falling to Texas State 2-0.

A day after losing two games to No. 16 Louisiana in a double-header, No. 14 Baylor looked to regain their mojo offensively in a midweek game against UTSA in San Antonio. The Bears were able to do just that in a 7-1 victory over the in-state rivals on Wednesday night.

Baylor baseball’s pitching staff has not missed a beat this season. The kind of consistency and success they have had can be credited to a few starting pitchers in other instances, but the Bears have got the job done in their own way.

No. 14 Baylor softball knew it was in for a tough ride when it scheduled No. 16 Louisiana in a mid-week, non-conference, double-header Tuesday night in Waco. The Ragin Cajuns did not disappoint, taking advantage of every opportunity to win back-to-back games 5-2 and 7-4 at Getterman Stadium.

Coming off a huge road win at Kansas State this weekend, breaking a long losing streak away from home, the Bears returned to Baylor Ballpark with energy and confidence in game one of a split series with Texas State. Baylor took the first game 4-3 in a sloppy, 7-error outing.

The Bears kept riding the waves of fortune after getting a 1-0 win Tuesday night against Texas Southern University to start a two-game winning streak. Baylor baseball can keep the victory flame burning going into an expectedly cold weekend at Kansas State.
