Brennen DiMarzo | Contributor The Jubilee Food Market, which opened on Dec. 1, 2016, hasn’t had the influx of people originally expected. “Problems with getting a food stamp license were one of the causes,” Keith McGee, assistant manager, said. The market was built by Mission Waco with the objective of bringing food to the food desert in the surrounding area. The United States Department of Agriculture defines food deserts as an area that is often short on whole food providers, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. Mission Waco was able to fund the market through the multiple donations made by companies…

Concluding a contentious election cycle, President Donald Trump was finally sworn into office last Friday in Washington. The nation — and the world — kept their eyes fixed on the mix of supporters and protesters who attended the event. In that moment, the reality of what had happened set in: a portion of the American public saw Trump’s appointment as a battle that was won, and for others, a battle lost. Moving forward, however, another challenge has been presented that Americans must not lose: Citizens must learn to differentiate agreement from understanding. The group of people who helped get Trump…
Many students were put on edge during the first few days of the new semester, as multiple reports surfaced of two men driving around in a sports car and stopping to rob people at gunpoint. When one of the suspects turned himself in, those fears should have been lessened. However, reports have since poured in about another individual who is breaking into people’s apartments. If any meaning is to be drawn from these crimes, it’s that they are not coming from one specific individual, and they can take place anywhere. They also serve as a reminder that the Baylor Bubble…

By Erica Thorpe | Special Contributor Washington is a city that I know well. I’ve worked here many summers in a row and fell in love with the architecture, history, and the ever-present action and potential that comes along with being in the nation’s capitol. Coming to Washington for the inauguration has snapped me out of my enchantment. This morning I walked the streets of the National Mall, and they were not the streets that I know and love. Protesters followed the crowds from gate to gate, shutting each one down as they went and forcing ticket holders to lose…
By Hannah Neumann | Special Contributor This morning I made my way to the capitol in Washington to document Donald Trump becoming the 45th president of the United States. After a very long walk and multiple diversions due to protest groups, I stood in line for hours, with thousands of others, waiting to pass through the security checkpoint and make my way towards the capitol. There were multiple instances in line of Trump supporters chanting their support for the President-elect and singing songs like the “National Anthem” and “Amazing Grace”, as well as protesters chanting and marching alongside the line…
By Kelsey Wolf, Guest Columnist“Why would you want to teach? Wouldn’t you like to make a lot more money?”When I tell people that I’m joining Teach For America to teach high school English in Dallas-Fort Worth next year, I’ve received every possible reaction. My professors are excited that I’m contributing to an often undervalued field. My parents are incredibly proud of my decision, even though they’ll be sad I’ll be teaching 500 miles from home. And most of my friends are excited even though some don’t understand why teaching is so important to me.I’ve appreciated the many encouraging responses, but…
At last the time is here — business mogul and reality TV star Donald J. Trump is going to be sworn in as the 45th president of the United States today. Throughout his campaign and president-elect period, there has been powerful skepticism about his qualification to be president, and even after his election there were many who condemned his hold on the presidential seat. All of the debates are to be laid to rest today, but many of Trump’s critics are not about to take his ascension lying down. To all who disagree with the president-elect’s policies and his election…
When you drive across the Texas border, a welcome sign reads: “Drive friendly – the Texas way.” Living in Waco, this proposition should be fairly simple to uphold. After all, there isn’t excessive traffic at rush hour, and freeway pileups don’t run rampant. Despite it all, most drivers, even in Waco, tend to hold a pessimistic mindset while navigating the roads. Whether it stems from crowded highways, unrelated stress or bad time management, road rage can loom over our daily routes. Car crashes peak among college-aged drivers (18 to 25 year olds) at more than 215,501 crashes total in 2015…

At the end of each year, Oxford Dictionaries selects a word that the editors feel is the best summation of the previous 12 months. In 2015, the “Word of the Year” was an emoji, specifically the “crying tears of joy” emoji, and was chosen because it seemed the best reflection of the general global attitude and preoccupations. To represent 2016, though, Oxford Dictionaries has chosen a word that carries with it a significantly greater weight: post-truth. According to the Oxford Dictionaries website, post-truth is defined as “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping…

Video and story by Elisabeth Tharp | Broadcast Reporter This season Baylor University’s Track and field team has a new athlete who has come all the way from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Leticia de Souza won the Brazilian National Junior Championships in the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.93 seconds and was named best female athlete at the meet. Leticia represented her home country in the 2016 Rio Olympics and represented Baylor for the first time this weekend. “It was perfect,” Leticia said when asked how the Olympics were. “Mostly because it was in my country so I had…
New year, new me — That’s what we always say, isn’t it? When that Times Square ball drops each year, we all expect that suddenly our lives are magically going to change – that we’ll lose the weight, meet the Dean’s List requirements or get that job promotion we’ve been dreaming of. Whatever your goal for the next year is, the beginning of a new year seems likes the perfect time to start. However, as soon as the first month goes by, we begin to lose sight of our goals ,and all of a sudden we’re right back where we…
By Associated Press WASHINGTON — Sen. Jeff Sessions cast himself as a strong protector of law and order at his confirmation hearing Tuesday, promising that as attorney general he would crack down on illegal immigration, gun violence and the “scourge of radical Islamic terrorism.” Sessions, echoing rhetoric used on the campaign trail by President-elect Donald Trump, warned of a country struggling to combat illegal drugs flooding across the border, spikes in violent crime in American cities and low morale among police. “These trends cannot continue. It is a fundamental civil right to be safe in your home and your community,” the Alabama…
By Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Brenda Tracy looked out from the stage at a ballroom filled with at least 3,000 football coaches and was terrified. Being invited to speak to the American Football Coaches Association’s annual convention gave her the biggest audience yet to discuss how to stop sexual assault and violence against women. So Tracy walked around throughout her 20-minute segment Monday until leaving the stage when finished. She heard the loud applause but missed the standing ovation from many coaches in the audience. Not that it mattered, with so many coaches stopping her and thanking her for…
By Jim Vertuno | Associated Press AUSTIN — Former Baylor football coach Art Briles sued three school regents and a vice president for libel and slander Thursday, accusing them of falsely stating he knew of reported assaults and alleged gang rapes by players and didn’t report them. The lawsuit also asserts that Baylor officials conspired to damage his reputation and keep him from getting another coaching job. It also seeks damages for emotional distress and likely ending his career as a coach “on any level.” “Some people think themselves above the law, but the laws of Texas establish accountability for everyone,…
By Jacquelyn Kellar | Broadcast Managing Editor In the spirit of the upcoming Christmas season, students are donating to alpha Kappa Delta Phi’s Clothing Drive. It can be easy for some college students, clad in name brands and warm winter clothes, to forget what it’s like for those who are less fortunate. In hopes to clear some students’ closets while also providing for others, aKDPhi has donation boxes stationed on campus. “We thought it would be a perfect time, since we just had Thanksgiving break, the holidays are coming up, to host a clothing drive to help the Waco youth,”…
December is finally here, and with it comes the whirlwind of the Christmas countdown, the drop in temperatures and the final stretch before the end of semester. It is sometimes easy to get wrapped up in the stress of finals and gift-getting during the season, but it is important to keep in mind those who are near and dear.Following a long semester of independence and exemplifying the college lifestyle, going back to your family’s house can feel a bit constraining. Being back in close quarters with possibly different schedules and expectations from family members can cause resentment. However, spending your…
By Megan McCasland | ContributorTo get all the wiggles out, 40 first- through fifth-graders, chatting excitedly with the volunteers who picked them up, walk two blocks every day after school from Dean Highland Elementary School to Highland Baptist Church. Once there, they play on the playground, have snacks, go through a rotation between a Bible story, play games, receive tutoring and finish homework. This program is called WiN, which stands for “Wisdom and iNstruction from the Lord,” and is a mentoring and tutoring program that happens every Monday through Friday after school for three hours in between when the students get…
Plato wrote “To prefer evil to good is not in human nature; and when a man is compelled to choose one of two evils, no one will choose the greater when he might have the less.” The argument of innate human evil stretches back to the early days of the Greek and Roman renaissance. How can humans have the power to be so good and still commit atrocities against their fellow men? Is it in our nature, or are we taught to behave that way? Can we change? All of these questions circle in our heads when we watch the…
You recently announced that you will not be releasing past minutes from your quarterly meetings. Individuals such as John Eddie Williams, a Baylor donor and member of the Bears for Leadership Reform, have criticized this decision. Sure, you will release future minutes, but that’s not enough. We join with alumni and former regents such as Drayton McLane to call for complete transparency. For a governing body that has been under such national scrutiny for its lack of transparency, one would think this would be an opportunity to exonerate yourselves. There are sure to be some of you who are fighting for…
Video by Christina Soto | Broadcast Reporter and story by Adrian Sainz | Associated Press MIAMI — Joaquin Palacio adored his grandfather’s tobacco farm in Cuba’s lush Pinar Del Rio province. As a boy he learned to plow the land, grow crops and ride his black horse, Centella. Before Fidel Castro, it was a place for vacations from the family’s home in Havana, and a classroom for learning responsibility and hard work. “It was a good life. There was no conflict, no issues,” Palacio said Monday, wearing a fishing shirt as he sat on a sofa surrounded by tropical trees…
