The current state of foster care in the United States is not acceptable. Children are distraught, forgotten and mistreated by the system that is meant to protect them. While foster care has received many years of reform and change, there is still much room for improvement. According to the official U.S. Department of Welfare’s child and family services website, childwelfare.gov, the goal of child welfare and the foster system is to “promote the well-being, permanency, and safety of children and families by helping families care for their children successfully or, when that is not possible, helping children find permanency with…
Presidential children have always been in the media’s eye. From Jenna and Barbara Bush’s DUI drama in June 2001 to Malia Obama’s little marijuana incident in August of last year, even their smallest foibles and follies are constantly in the news. In recent years, it has become even harder to avoid the public eye, and for a child with famous parents, the results of this media attention can be detrimental to their lifestyle. Most recently, Barron, the 10-year-old son of President Donald Trump, has come under fire on social media. With people posting disparaging comments about the child’s character and…
Well into the his third week in office, President Donald Trump and his administration have been in a continual state of action. It turns out that his inauguration speech, in which he reiterated multiple campaign promises, has been a pretty accurate roadmap for what policies would take precedence during his first weeks in office. With 22 executive actions under his belt, the president is indeed testing the waters of executive reach. For those who disagree with the administration, the pace and scope of decisions being made is alarming. But voters who agree with the changes should also be wary.To be…
By Elisabeth Tharp | Broadcast Reporter Since 1976, the month of February has been dedicated to remembering African American history and things are just getting started. Baylor students spoke out on what Black History Month means to them and who they look up to most during this time. “I feel we celebrate Black History Month because it is a time to show our younger generation and other people what black excellence is in America,” said sophomore Daria Johnson. “This month is to show far we have come and where we are going,” Johnson said. “I look up to my dad,”…
Dear Baylor Board of Regents, We understand you will be gathering soon for your February executive meeting. The Lariat wishes you safe travels and wisdom as you review the recommendations put forth by the Governance Review Task Force on Jan. 16. We were troubled, however, to find that among the recommendations for changes to the “Special Selection Process,” every non-voting member of the board would be granted voting rights except for the two student regents. In light of the recently released document regarding alleged texts from former head football coach Art Briles, which detailed instances where students’ concerns were largely…
Thomas and Jakob recap Superbowl XLI and also react to the 2017 NFL Hall of Fame Inductees. Finally, the guys break down Baylor basketball’s two straight losses and finish with the 2 minute drill.
In his heart-rending Holocaust memoir “Night,” Elie Wiesel discusses at length the importance of remembering injustice. “To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time,” he writes.Jan. 27 was Holocaust Remembrance Day. While the holiday’s title suggests that the horrific event of the Holocaust is what renders remembrance, Wiesel and countless other who have suffered injustice argue that remembering the injustice itself is not enough. We must remember the reason for the injustice as well as the people who were affected. The statement the White House released on Holocaust Remembrance Day failed to do just that. “It…
By Elisabeth Tharp Baylor University’s Mayborn Museum Complex is currently presenting the Wizard of Oz Children’s Educational Exhibit. In 1939, we watched Dorothy’s journey along the yellow brick road to get back to her home in Kansas. Now in 2017, you can come and experience Dorothy’s journey yourself. On your exploration you will see familiar faces like Glenda, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. “This exhibit is an introduction to the popular story we know and love. The Wizard of Oz is really one of Americas home-grown fairytales,” said Assistant Director of Exhibits, Communication, & Visitor Services…
Matt Bryant, a Baylor alum will be playing in the Super Bowl this Sunday as the kicker for the Atlanta Falcons. Chris Callahan, a Baylor kicker, comments on their similarities as kickers. Jack Parsley and Christopher Strange give their opinions on Matt Bryant and how they think he will contribute to the game.
When we think back to some of our earliest and most influential role models, thoughts of kind-hearted teachers often come to mind. After all, as students, we saw our teachers almost every day while building connections with them based on mutual trust and respect. It’s no question whether teachers play an integral role in the lives of their students. Because of the formative role teachers play in the lives of their students, it’s clear that the job of an educator is multifaceted. Teachers are often the first people students go to about problems they may be having. In the current…
Video by Jessica Babb | Broadcast Managing Editor Article by Kalyn Story | Staff Writer After a former Baylor Bruin filed a lawsuit Friday against the university suing for Title IX violations and negligence, other former Bruins have spoken out detailing different experiences they had as Bruins. The lawsuit, filed by Elizabeth Doe, claims Baylor had a “show ’em a good time” recruiting policy, which included making Baylor Bruins available for sex with recruits, taking recruits to strip clubs, recruiting based on implied promises of sex and using alcohol and drugs in the recruiting process. Baylor alumna Ashton Bremer was…
In October 2013, the pro-life community ended the reign of abortion in Waco. Sadly, the victory may be short lived. According to a Waco Tribune article published on Oct. 1, 2013, the Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas relinquished its abortion license for Waco after House Bill 2 (HB2) was passed that requires all doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges in hospitals within 30 miles of the clinic, which the Waco Planned Parenthood’s staff did not. The activism of sidewalk counselors and protesters, combined with new health regulations, left Planned Parenthood without doctors willing or legally able to provide abortions…
Living a healthy lifestyle in college can be difficult. Many of us rush from one activity to the next and find little time for healthy eating habits. Eating properly requires money and time, both of which are difficult to secure on a daily basis. That being said, there are those who make an effort to eat well. Fifteen percent of Baylor undergraduates are currently enrolled in Health and Human Sciences courses, and the student population has a Vegetarian Club, the Baylor Student Nutrition Association and numerous athletic clubs. This shows a clear interest in well-being, as students are motivated enough to…
Katelin Simonson | ContributerAt a young age, both James and GlenAnn McBride discovered a passion for machine work, but as GlenAnn signed the ownership papers making Waco Tool & Die a reality, her hands shook as she held the pen.“All we had in our pockets at the time was grocery money,” GlenAnn said, “and there we were, buying a machine shop.” In 1986, the McBride family was both excited and nervous about the beginning of this new chapter in their lives. Owning a machine shop had never been in their plan, but both GlenAnn, owner and vice president, and James,…

We’ve heard about it since he announced his candidacy in 2015: President Donald Trump wants to build a wall. A huge wall. However, building a wall is not the most effective way to handle immigration. Instead, Trump should consider overhauling the immigration system. Instead of focusing his energy (and our money, not Mexico’s) on keeping certain people out, Trump should spearhead the development of a more effective, streamlined immigration process. There needs to be a more efficient way for people enter the United States. Many of these people who are crossing the border are fleeing dangerous countries. They are running…
Authors of dystopian novels across the globe were proven wrong last week when, in the face of controversial government decisions, the resistance was led not by a teenager from a lower class family, but by the Badlands National Park via its social media accounts. Last week, newly minted President Donald Trump issued what has been widely regarded as a gag order to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Departments of the Interior, Agriculture and Health and Human Services mandating employees refrain from posting on social media, sending news releases and uploading blog posts or website content. In addition, he…
By Christina Soto | Broadcast Reporter In light of the series of marches across the country, Baylor students shared their views on feminism in today’s society. Pace, Fla., sophomore, Katy Mahaffey shared her views on the feminist of today saying she doesn’t think they represent all women. “They completely pull the victim card, they don’t want to work hard, they don’t want to be strong and I don’t think that is what a women is,” Mahaffey said. Seagraves, senior, Brent Golden said a lot of men view feminist in the light of being man-haters however he disagrees. “I think feminism…
By Elisabeth Tharp | Broadcast Reporter Baylor University offers students a plethora of sports to choose from, including Equestrian. The women’s Baylor Equestrian team had their first home spring competition at the Willis Family Equestrian Center this weekend. Senior Baylor rider Savannah Jenkins from Virginia explained how the horses are chosen each meet. “We choose the horses at the beginning of a competition week, the ones we feel the most comfortable on,” Jenkins said. “As far as meet days goes the judges will do a blind draw from three hats with names inside each. One has the chosen horses and…
There are many forms of media bias. Some can be detected easily by the clear use of opinion or the omission of necessary facts, but some are buried deeper, with the use of diction that alludes to an opinion, or an image that tells a different story than an article was meant to project. As adults and continued news consumers of society, it is important for Baylor students to understand how to detect sources that are unable to fulfill the task of reporting news fairly. By determining which news sources are not worth reading, the power of readership is transferred back…
Brennen DiMarzo | Contributor The Jubilee Food Market, which opened on Dec. 1, 2016, hasn’t had the influx of people originally expected. “Problems with getting a food stamp license were one of the causes,” Keith McGee, assistant manager, said. The market was built by Mission Waco with the objective of bringing food to the food desert in the surrounding area. The United States Department of Agriculture defines food deserts as an area that is often short on whole food providers, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. Mission Waco was able to fund the market through the multiple donations made by companies…
Concluding a contentious election cycle, President Donald Trump was finally sworn into office last Friday in Washington. The nation — and the world — kept their eyes fixed on the mix of supporters and protesters who attended the event. In that moment, the reality of what had happened set in: a portion of the American public saw Trump’s appointment as a battle that was won, and for others, a battle lost. Moving forward, however, another challenge has been presented that Americans must not lose: Citizens must learn to differentiate agreement from understanding. The group of people who helped get Trump…
Many students were put on edge during the first few days of the new semester, as multiple reports surfaced of two men driving around in a sports car and stopping to rob people at gunpoint. When one of the suspects turned himself in, those fears should have been lessened. However, reports have since poured in about another individual who is breaking into people’s apartments. If any meaning is to be drawn from these crimes, it’s that they are not coming from one specific individual, and they can take place anywhere. They also serve as a reminder that the Baylor Bubble…

By Erica Thorpe | Special Contributor Washington is a city that I know well. I’ve worked here many summers in a row and fell in love with the architecture, history, and the ever-present action and potential that comes along with being in the nation’s capitol. Coming to Washington for the inauguration has snapped me out of my enchantment. This morning I walked the streets of the National Mall, and they were not the streets that I know and love. Protesters followed the crowds from gate to gate, shutting each one down as they went and forcing ticket holders to lose…
By Hannah Neumann | Special Contributor This morning I made my way to the capitol in Washington to document Donald Trump becoming the 45th president of the United States. After a very long walk and multiple diversions due to protest groups, I stood in line for hours, with thousands of others, waiting to pass through the security checkpoint and make my way towards the capitol. There were multiple instances in line of Trump supporters chanting their support for the President-elect and singing songs like the “National Anthem” and “Amazing Grace”, as well as protesters chanting and marching alongside the line…
By Kelsey Wolf, Guest Columnist“Why would you want to teach? Wouldn’t you like to make a lot more money?”When I tell people that I’m joining Teach For America to teach high school English in Dallas-Fort Worth next year, I’ve received every possible reaction. My professors are excited that I’m contributing to an often undervalued field. My parents are incredibly proud of my decision, even though they’ll be sad I’ll be teaching 500 miles from home. And most of my friends are excited even though some don’t understand why teaching is so important to me.I’ve appreciated the many encouraging responses, but…
At last the time is here — business mogul and reality TV star Donald J. Trump is going to be sworn in as the 45th president of the United States today. Throughout his campaign and president-elect period, there has been powerful skepticism about his qualification to be president, and even after his election there were many who condemned his hold on the presidential seat. All of the debates are to be laid to rest today, but many of Trump’s critics are not about to take his ascension lying down. To all who disagree with the president-elect’s policies and his election…
