When walking into the Bill Daniel Student Center’s food court, it’s easy to pile up in the Chick-fil-A line. The comfort of the chicken sandwich lures students into long waits. But right next door is a new Asian fusion restaurant, Asian Tako, that will make you quickly forget all about the waffle fries.
I decided to take a break from fast food and try Asian Tako, and I was not disappointed.
As a cheese dip connoisseur, I had to dive into its version of chips and queso. Instead of regular tortilla chips, I was delighted with a mix of corn and wonton chips. They were crispy and perfectly salted, even after I left them in my fridge for a few hours. The queso exceeded my expectations. It had a good spice that wasn’t overpowering. A combination of a cheddar blend and red peppers, it made for a flavorful appetizer.
I ordered the beef fajita taco next. The taco came with queso fresco, cabbage, crispy onions and sriracha. On the side, it included teriyaki sauce and green salsa. I preferred the green salsa because I thought it paired better with the flavors. Evidently, the green salsa was prepared in-house and was super fresh. The beef was well-seasoned and not chewy or tough. This taco will be one of my staples when I’m on campus looking for a quick lunch.
The last thing I ordered was the chicken fajita taco. This delightful taco had cilantro, pickled carrots, chives and yellow curry chicken. Asian Tako does not skimp on texture. The toppings added a great crunch and flavor. The taco came with a peanut sauce, but be warned — it comes with a kick. The sauce was the perfect combination of sweet and spicy, which paired great with the savory taco. I still prefer the beef fajita taco, but this was a great addition to my meal.
Next time you walk up to one of the fast food lines on campus, turn around and go to Asian Tako. It will leave you satisfied and ready to tackle the rest of your day.
