While tradition can feel cheesy even to the biggest of Baylor Bears, I would never call Baylor Homecoming “overhyped.”
Now, coming from an All-University Sing chair who has spent too much time thinking about Pigskin Revue, you might think, “Of course she likes homecoming.” And yes — I absolutely adore watching the floats as they round Fountain Mall, and the warmth that hits me when the bonfire gets lit is like no other. Still, homecoming is more than just school pride.
Homecoming is an opportunity to connect with past generations, discover new traditions and be sentimental about your college years. That’s why there are so many different events.
So don’t just roll your eyes when your department invites you to its homecoming celebration. Try out the event. At the very least, there is probably free food involved. Then again, you may meet alumni with an exciting career path or someone willing to give you life advice.
And while you may have some rough memories from your on-campus housing freshman year, explore if your old residence hall is hosting an event. For example, Collins Hall is opening its doors to past residents on the Friday of homecoming. When a university has been around as long as Baylor has, you’re bound to meet some exciting characters from various generations. In fact, my grandma lived in Collins Hall when women weren’t even allowed to wear pants on campus.
Homecoming is also a great time for discovery. Because so much is happening, grab a friend and try a new event. While waiting for the bonfire my junior year, I remember hearing a distinct booming sound coming from the Bill Daniel Student Center. I walked through the doors to find the Royal & Pure Homecoming Stroll-Off. The event, in which National Pan-Hellenic Council chapters compete in step-dancing, is highly entertaining and a must-see if you have yet to witness strolling.
And if you’ve ever watched a TikTok and wondered what it would be like to have gone to a high school that did mums, look no further. The Martin Museum hosts a mum-making celebration in the days leading up to homecoming. And even better, it’s free for students.
So don’t get overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of homecoming weekend. See what events are happening and choose something new. You never know what traditions you might unlock if you hop in.
