Baylor will honor former softball standout pitcher Whitney Canion by retiring her jersey (No. 11) – a first in program history – this weekend. Canion’s number will be retired prior to Baylor’s game against Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Getterman Stadium.

It was a game of missed opportunities as No. 12 Baylor softball stranded seven runners on the way to falling to No. 13 Oklahoma 3-2 in the first game of the three-game weekend series against the Sooners.

Sometimes it feels like senior pitcher Whitney Canion has been at Baylor forever. Thanks to multiple injury-plagued seasons, this is Canion’s sixth year on campus. Throughout all the adversity, Canion has forged her path as the unquestioned greatest pitcher in Baylor softball history.

Baylor softball took both games of its doubleheader Tuesday against Northwestern State at Getterman Stadium.

After advancing to the Women’s College World Series semi finals and finishing fourth in the nation, No. 7 Baylor softball is back in action, “fueled by their past and driven by the future they seek.”

Freshman Dallas Escobedo threw a five-hit shutout, Mandy Urfer hit a two-run homer and top-seeded Arizona State beat Baylor 4-0 on Sunday to reach the finals of the Women’s College World Series.

As a record crowd of 1,484, showed up to green out Getterman Stadium, the No. 3 Texas Longhorns shut out the Lady Bears’ softball team, 3-0.

Lightning lengthened and then cut short No. 14 Baylor softball’s home matchup against Texas State Tuesday, but not before the Bears took a 4-1, five-inning win into the locker room.

The No. 15 Lady Bears improved on their Big 12 record, now 7-3, as they swept the Kansas Jayhawks in a two-game series in Lawrence, Kan., last weekend.

The Baylor softball team defeated the Missouri Tigers 3-2 with a walk-off sac-fly to right center on Saturday; however, it could not maintain this momentum as it went into Sunday’s game, losing 6-0.

Last weekend the battle between the No. 17 Baylor and No. 21 Texas A&M softball teams proved how tough conference play will be in 2011 as they split the series, both with walk-off home runs. Baylor took the first game Saturday, 2-1, in 11 innings and Texas A&M took the second, 6-5.
