At Wylie High School, Abilene senior Drew Seale was a self-proclaimed “basketball player who ran track.” The dream of following in the footsteps of a long line of Baylor Bears in his family led him to talk to head coach Todd Harbour about walking onto the track team as an 800-meter runner.

“They didn’t think I would do anything, which is fine,” Seale said. “If I saw a walk-on come on, I’d probably think the same thing.”

The majority of Baylor’s track and field athletes were able to take Easter weekend off to relax and prepare for their next meet, a rejuvenation that should be to their advantage as they prepare to battle the relentless winds that seem to dictate meets in Lubbock.

Most students spent spring break lying out on the beach, skiing on the slopes or just finding some way to relax. Baylor track and field, however, spent the week preparing for and competing in their first outdoor meet of the season.

Baylor’s most outstanding runners from past and present were featured on the home track last weekend at the Michael Johnson Dr Pepper Classic. World-class competitors watched as Baylor athletes and 18 other schools competed at the Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex.

Through only the second outdoor meet, Baylor’s track and field squad has claimed 13 events, broken two school records and had 19 performances in the top 15 in the NCAA. At the Bobby Lane Invitational at the University of Texas-Arlington last weekend, Baylor grabbed nine titles.
