As a cultural sport, kendo may not be as well-known as others on campus. However, after receiving club sport status, the Baylor Kendo Club is reaching new heights with additional funding and opportunities.
The Baylor Black Alumni Alliance is hosting its second reunion this weekend with a ceremony, tailgate and worship experience, allowing alumni to reconnect with each other and celebrate achievements.
Luci Ramos Hoppe, who serves as the bachelor’s of social work program director, was one of 12 professors to receive an outstanding faculty award for the 2022-2023 academic year. She said one thing that stands out to her when reflecting on her teaching career is that for her, teaching is a vocation, not just a job.
Baylor’s campus recreation program, Outdoor Adventure, offers a variety of getaway trips for students during the fall semester. Outdoor activities featured on these trips include kayaking, hiking, rock climbing and more.
“People don’t realize we have over 23 aircrafts sitting painted like Baylor colors not too far from campus,” Sloane said. “People can visualize a chemistry lab — we have a lab — ours are just at the airport with planes. We have an incredibly robust program.”
Baylor’s Counseling Center is offering Question, Persuade, Refer Gatekeeper Training for students from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 10 in Moody-Memorial Library’s Active Learning Lab. The training will allow students to become mental health allies by equipping them with tools to identify warning signs in their peers.
Rain impacted more than just the football game last weekend. Due to lightning, several Family Weekend events like Taste Of Waco and Family Weekend Marketplace were canceled altogether.
Celebrating Constitution Day, Baylor welcomed guest speaker Dr. Elizabeth Busch to lead a policy-neutral conversation entitled “Restoring the Constitutional Integrity of Title IX.”

Attending organ donors and recipients will be able to put their handprints on the Donate Life Texas NASCAR, symbolizing the name of the event, “Handprints for Hope.” According to SODA’s Instagram, a “celebration about the power of organ donation” ceremony will be followed by a meet and greet with NASCAR driver Joey Gase.
Baylor researchers have been awarded $2.5 million across five years to pursue mental health opportunities for students in the Waco area. The program, Partnering for Heart of Texas Mental Health, will also assist Baylor students working toward master’s degrees in social work as it funds their education.
The Mark and Paula Hurd Welcome Center opened its doors to students, faculty and families with its inaugural Huddle at the Hurd event Friday in hopes of getting the Baylor Family involved in the game day hype.
Kappa Kappa Gamma hosted its annual Kappa Karnival Thursday night, complete with an extensive lineup of vendors, carnival food, caricature artists, face painting, fraternity-run carnival games and more. Family Weekend will feature a variety of attractions for all students on Friday and Saturday, including food trucks, local vendors and family worship. But for multiple-generation students, Family Weekend looks more like a reunion.
According to Marcos Landin, primary blood drive coordinator, the Carter BloodCare mission statement is to “save lives by making transfusion possible.” He said blood is a constant need in the medical field, and a one-pint donation can save up to three lives.
The Humane Society of Central Texas has nearly 200 dogs waiting to be fostered and provides resources to set foster applicants up for success. Brooke Farrell, the Humane Society’s director of development and public relations, said that while foster parents may only be taking one dog under their wing, they are doing an act of service for other dogs at the shelter by decreasing the number on the at-risk list and freeing up a crate.
Every Monday night, a gathering of Baylor students can be found singing, worshiping and declaring the same message: They’d “rather have Jesus.” Now, what began as a small group of Baylor students leading one another in prayer and worship is returning to its roots of being student-led.

The Baylor School of Music is relaunching Oso Musical this semester after it was shut down in 2021 due to pandemic-related health concerns. The volunteer-based program allows Baylor students to lead free music classes for K-12 children with disabilities in Waco.

Nichole Bekken, project manager of construction services, said she began planning for the $7.5 million renovation of both Allen and Dawson halls following the Board of Regents budget approval for the year in May. She said she is focused on creating community spaces that will enhance the connections between the LEAD Living-Learning Community—which is the community currently in Dawson—and the IMPACT LLC, following a fall 2022 merger of the two.
The Mayborn Museum is preparing for one of its largest renovation projects, which includes a four-phase plan that will upgrade current galleries, adapt storage space and add new features to the building.

Every year at orientation, the incoming class gets to learn its class hymn. Each class hymn is about the transformation of incoming freshmen as they become adults, allowing them to get a glimpse of what is to come as Baylor Bears. For the class of 2027, they learned “There’s More.”
Repeated reports of rats in the off-campus apartment complex Park Place continue this semester. Students who live there say the issue has persisted for multiple semesters, yet management has not done much about it.
