Announced to Baylor students via newsflash email in the evening of Sept. 15, the closures begin with a full shutdown of the eastbound 18th Street, which will reopen by 7 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19. Following the removal of the 18th Street bridge, the email said that westbound 17th Street will be closed from Sept. 21-24. The highway itself will remain open throughout the removal of the bridges, the email stated.

David Bess, assistant vice president of planning and construction and university architect, said the construction includes two major parts — updated accommodations for the acrobatics and tumbling team and deferred maintenance for the entire building.

Campaign season for Baylor’s next student body president kicked off Wednesday, with three experienced juniors vying for the title. These three candidates have each had extensive experience in different areas of student government, making for a close presidential race.

“There is, of course, Baylor University’s new Foster basketball pavilion and the supporting infrastructure that goes with that, which includes a parking garage,” Rutherford said. “As well as some residential and restaurant/retail space … there is a park in the middle, which is traditionally where the farmers market has operated, and then we will have two riverfront restaurants that overhang the river, and then we have a hotel that is just west of the park space.”

Nichole Bekken, construction project manager, said demolition started in Memorial Hall and has jumped over to Alexander Hall, with 50-75% of the demolition work completed. She said crews are also working on the connector between the two buildings — named the Carona Family Commons in recognition of the gift from John and Helen Carona.

Even without a parking permit, driving on campus for events that are outside of towing and fining periods is a hassle if you don’t plan at least 15 minutes to find parking. For students who can’t afford to pay for the expensive registration fee or who physically cannot walk far to class due to conditions, the university should consider having new parking on campus for students.
