The moment someone announces they’re about to tell a joke, the audience is braced to expect a laugh. It’s a setup, a planned situation where the comedian’s only job is to get a reaction. This makes the jokes feel fake, as if the performer cares more about their delivery than actually connecting with the crowd. True humor usually comes from unplanned, spur-of-the-moment situations that aren’t trying to be funny — they just are.

As we watch Sing next year, I challenge us to revisit our expectations. Ask yourself what is entertaining and what is excellent, and why you believe an act fits in either category (or both). I don’t think it’s a coincidence all six of the people’s choice awards from this year went to all-women’s acts.

Humor, in my opinion, is one of the best medicines around, especially for a college student. It can be a stress reliever, bring people together or lightly poke fun at certain situations or stereotypes.
