“The only reason I am still here is is because God used the community of believers to support me in my healing,” Barnard said. “It wasn’t me going to church but the church coming to me.”

People deal with change differently, but there tend to be two types of people in this world: those who accept change with open arms and those who fear it. However you cope, your attitude toward change matters, so it may be time for a mindset makeover.
Recidivism refers to how often people reenter the justice system after their first offense. Texas reports a 21% recidivism rate as of 2022, well below the national average of 68%. Despite this, Judge Rob Swanton of the specialty courts said there is a lack of funding and a shortage of mental health providers for these individuals.
“[Baylor University Counseling Center’s] mission is to foster wholeness for every student through caring relationships, cultural humility and integrated mental health services,” Annie Mathew, the director of the counseling center, said.
“You can do it as long as you’re truly taking care of your body,” she said. “Know how much stress you can handle, and don’t push yourself more than you should.”
All services offered by the Counseling Center are free, including telehealth services, face-to-face counseling and the mental health clinical support line. However, some programs that fall under the health services category — such as general medical care, medical nutrition therapy and psychiatric services — require payment, which is usually covered by insurance.
If you’re the type to cry at “Nemo” or fast forward through ASPCA commercials, prepare your tissues, but keep an open mind. “Shrinking” will cheer you up after it tears you down.
It could happen to anyone. Male, female. Any race. Any age. Sexual assault is a very real problem.
Baylor is ready to handle sexual assault cases. In 2011, the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights released its Dear Colleague Letter and it encouraged universities to actively be aware of Title IX issues.
Lacking awareness of counseling benefits is causing some international students to look elsewhere for advice in times of high stress.
During the peak of counseling sessions, faculty members are concerned about the additional pressure international students face in adapting to a new environment alone.
While counseling services may be an outlet of support via the Baylor Counseling Center in the McLain Student Life Center, currently there is no program specifically for international students, nor is there a specific counselor designated to receive them, according to Dr. Jim Marsh, Baylor counseling services director.
