Baylor baseball third baseman Hunter Teplanszky tripped at first base when taking his secondary lead in the bottom of the first inning, but it was intentional. As Teplanszky face-planted, San Houston senior left-handed pitcher Gavi Coldiron disengaged with the rubber in confusion.

Baylor baseball juniors infielder Hunter Teplanszky and outfielders Ty Johnson and Wesley Jordan are consistent pieces of the Bears’ lineup. But before they were starters on head coach Mitch Thompson’s lineup, they were all teammates for the Marcus High School Marauders in Flower Mound.

Baylor baseball dropped the final two contests of a three-game series to Kansas following a blowout win on Friday night that marked the first time Baylor baseball had a .500 record since February 2023. The Bears fell in the series finale by a score of 12-2 on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.

Headlined by a six-run eighth inning, Baylor baseball rallied back to extend its winning streak to three and knock off HCU, 13-4, at Baylor Ballpark on Tuesday.

After Baylor baseball plated its first run of the game in the top of the third inning, 12 of the next 13 Sam Houston batters reached base — including 10 straight — to craft a 12-run bottom of the third inning. The Bearkats used that hot start and dominated the Bears 18-3 on Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville.

Baylor (5-11, 0-3 Big 12) was firing on all cylinders as it tallied a season-high in runs and hits with 17 apiece. For the second time this year, all nine starters notched at least one hit and five Bears recorded multi-hit games. The bats were led by senior catcher Harrison Caley, who swatted a career-high in hits, going 4-for-4 — including two home runs. Caley became the first Baylor batter since 2019 to chalk up seven RBIs.

With a year under his belt, head coach Mitch Thompson enters year two with a new motto: “To be the best, you have to beat the best.” And the Bears will get a chance to do just that as the first month of their season features the most difficult schedule in Division I, based on last year’s win percentage and RPI.

Baseball is a game of streaks — losing streaks and hitting streaks, slumps on the mound or at the plate, maybe even an unusually high number of consecutive wins. Baylor baseball has learned a thing or two about that when looking back on the 2012 season and a craze that stormed through Waco: “Feed the beaver.”

“My coaches tell me that my walk-up song is ‘I want it all and I want it now,’” head coach Mitch Thompson quipped. “That’s just the way it is, and that’s probably true. I’m a really impatient guy, and I do want it all, and I want it now, so give it to me now and let’s do it.”

From upsets over top-ranked teams to protecting home turf against conference foes, Baylor athletics has had another strong year. Even though both golf teams, softball, baseball and track and field are still competing as part of the 2022-2023 season, here’s a compilation of the best sports moments of the past year.

Entering the 2023 Baylor baseball season, a storyline to spot was the development of the Caley twins, and seeing the unspoken bond between the two. Now nearing the end of the season, each has been able to spend an ample amount of time together in one of the only direct tandem roles in baseball.
