“When I first came here, hamburgers were 25 cents, and for a nickel extra you could get an order of fries in a basket, and 15 cents extra was a Coke.”

Longtime Cupp’s Drive Inn customer Fred Winslow, who has been a regular since the 1960s, said he remembers a simpler time at this locally owned diner.

When I tried curry for the first time, I was in Ireland. It was at a high priced restaurant in Dublin city center. The whole experience was a night of firsts. I had a lamb curry. Here in the States, lamb is not as accessible on a student budget. But while I was eating the curry, I thought this could easily be done with different kinds of ingredients, much like stir fry. It had its simplicity and the ability to involve any kind of vegetable or meat I wanted. As a college student, this was paramount to me.

Could Vitek’s BBQ be the best college dive in the nation? The Cooking Channel wants visitors to their website to make that decision, as Vitek’s has been included in cookingchanneltv.com’s Bracket Battle for best college eats.

The Gut Pak, a signature meal from Vitek’s, will go head-to-head in the online polls against dishes from college towns all across the United States. The competition features meals such as the Phat Lady of restaurant Hoagie Haven in the Princeton University area, and the Ho Burger with Cheddar Tots – a dish from the University of Kentucky students’ local dive, Tolly-Ho. Visitors to the Cooking Channel’s website can vote from multiple devices, once per device per day, in the battling brackets for the restaurant dish they think is the best.

Order a bowl of turkey chili at a St. Louis-area Panera Bread cafe and it’ll cost you a penny. Or $5. Or $100. In other words, whatever you decide.

Three years after launching the first of five pay-what-you-want cafes, the suburban St. Louis-based chain on Wednesday quietly began its latest charitable venture that takes the concept on a trial run to all 48 cafes in the St. Louis region.

When I was younger, like many other girls, I was a Girl Scout. Yes, I did the whole door-to-door selling cookies, so I developed a soft spot for cookies. My mom was never one for baking either, so when I was old enough to learn how to bake, I was all for it.

Chinese New Year is in a little over a week, so when I was deciding on a DIY piece for this week, I headed over to pinterest and typed “Chinese New Year DIY.” Original? I’d like to think so.

I ended up finding a fortune cookie recipe. Not exactly a DIY, but hey, they’re fortune cookies. I mean how do you say no to fortune cookies?

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

I was craving a whole lot of sugar a few days ago, so I had the bright idea to make something super unhealthy. These brownies are the perfect combination of cookie, Oreo and brownie. I admit I got lazy and just bought a tub of cookie dough for the bottom layer. I found this recipe at www.whatsgabycooking.com. You can also use premade cookie dough and brownie mix instead of making them from scratch.

After almost two years of operation, Legacy Café and Art Gallery is looking to energize its clientele. James Lafayette, owner and manager of the café, has announced plans to open a private club in the upstairs section of the building that has been largely unused.

Lafayette said the club would feature a TV/lounge area where customers can relax. There will be two adjacent rooms, one for foosball and air hockey and other arcade-like games, and one quieter room for cards, chess or reading.

Amid all the fast food chains on Valley Mills Drive lies one of Waco’s most popular family-owned restaurants, Poppa Rollo’s Pizza.

This unique pizzeria has served the Waco community since Roland Duty opened it in 1969. The award-winning restaurant moved to its current location in 1979 and continues to boast the title “best pizza on Earth.”

As a Baylor student and self-proclaimed “foodie,” I had to visit this Waco legend.

Cartoon pandas are usually pictured with a bamboo stalk, but Panda Joe Tacos has chosen a sombrero as its mascot’s prop.

The taco vendor at 900 S. 18th St., which has recently become its permanent location, draws customers in with the cute Mexican panda bear painted on its truck.

Buzzard Billy’s, also known as the Swamp Shack, offers one of the most serene views of the Waco Bridge. Dining on the deck with the sunset on the Brazos River proves that Waco does have some perks.

The entrance to the restaurant includes a walk across a bridge over a green marsh that makes you feel like you are on the History Channel show “Swamp People.” As soon as you walk in the door, the Louisianan decor lets you know exactly what style of food you’re going to get.

Baylor students who wander around town looking for a great bite but find the same old options can finally have a say in their dinner.

You may have seen their advertisements on your Facebook sidebars, “Something exciting is coming to Waco!” The website, www.1401Speight.com, is letting Wacoans choose the cuisine of their upcoming Waco restaurant, via voting on their website.

The website, started by Baylor graduates Vincent and Chelsea Harris, gives four options: gourmet tacos, upscale franks or sausages, a burger bar or “other,” where you can write in your own vote.

Housed in a shabby little building at 1815 N. 18th St., Kitok is one of Waco’s more unconventional restaurant options. The mixture of American and Korean cuisine has earned quite the reputation among Wacoans who can look past the first impression.

Few Baylor students have frequented the family-owned café in Hewitt, The Mix Gifts and Café, but a new expansion that includes a coffee shop and food truck on Speight will be hard to miss.

The food truck, Street Eats, is currently open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday on the corner of Speight and 14th Street, and will continue the tradition of the Hewitt café’s famous French style quiches, sandwiches, soups and homemade desserts.

For those tired of the monotony of the city’s limited breakfast spots, Waco’s newest restaurant, The Egg & I, will offer an eccentric home-style breakfast and lunch spot.

The restaurant, set to open Monday, will serve interesting additions to the typical egg and sausage breakfast with vegetables such as asparagus, avocados and artichokes, breaking from the typical Texas breakfast with a healthier side.

It’s time to tidy up your room.

This weekend is Parents and Family Weekend, which means that campus will be filled to the brim with both seasoned veterans of the event, as well as first-time families of freshmen. The question to ask is “What is there to do in Waco, both on and off-campus?”
