By Camille Rasor | ContributorThis weekend welcomes one of Baylor’s most anticipated homecoming traditions — Pigskin Revue. One thousand students take the Waco Hall stage dressed in makeup and costumes prepared to perform the eight musical acts voted most impressive by the judges at spring’s All-University Sing. The performances begin with Kappa Chi Alpha’s sugar-sweet number, “Home Sweet Home,” which placed third in Sing. Performers dressed in bright colors, somewhat resembling candy canes and gumdrops, dance to upbeat songs in a candy landscape until midway through the act, when women dressed as “licorice” dominate the stage, antagonizing the colorful dancers…

Taylor Wolf | Editor-in-Chief Four to five suspects are still at large after a shooting at Eastgate Apartments near campus late Thursday afternoon. Waco PD is still investigating, but Sgt. David Conley said the incident does not involve Baylor. Conley said the suspects kicked in an apartment door and shot a 22-year-old man in the arm. It was a non-life-threatening injury, he said. The shooting at 1912 S. Fifth Street triggered a string of Baylor alerts giving periodic updates on the situation. The first Baylor Alert was sent out at 4:46 p.m. warning of a dangerous situation and advising that…

In a time when everyone is fighting to be relevant, there are oftentimes tweets and posts about an environmental phenomena or international disaster with no context. These posts often use rhetoric like “No one is talking about this!” or “Why is everyone talking about celebrity drama when this is happening?” Yet these insubstantial posts practice what they abhor: promoting a culture clueless about contemporary issues. You are not “woke” just because you have some key words in your social media content. These days, Twitter and other social media platforms seem to be a place for people to post passionately about…

By Taylor Wolf | Social Media EditorLadies, it’s uncool to use guys for free food. I was walking to class the other day and overheard a girl say to her friends: “I’m not, like, interested in dating him, but like, it’s free food, you know?” I’ve also heard the sayings: “A girl has got to eat” or “Hey, it’s a free meal!” I just think these are examples of unhealthy ways to look at dating — and people in general. On a fundamental level, we shouldn’t look at dating as just a way to see how much and what we…

Sponsored by the Baylor chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Hutchinson’s talk was based upon his latest book that was published last year, “Can a Scientist Believe in Miracles? An MIT Professor Answers Questions on God and Science.” Hutchinson has worked extensively on the philosophy of science and the relationship between science and religion and the book…

Taylor Wolf | Social Media Editor What differentiates a cult film from the countless other movies released from Hollywood every year? Why do these movies stand the test of time and, more importantly, maintain fervent multi-generational followers? In this series, Cult Film Crash Course, we attempt to answer these questions about cult film qualities and more! “10 Things I Hate About You” turns 20 on Sunday! By Taylor Wolf | Social Media EditorRecently, I was having a conversation with a mentor when she began to ask me if I had any more clarity on my post-grad plans. Almost cutting herself off, she immediately apologized for asking because she read in an editorial (“Seniors, it’s OK to not have a plan”) to stop asking seniors that question because of its negative mental and emotional effects. There is some definite truth in those points made, however, on the whole, I don’t think anyone should shy away from asking students about their post-grad plans. It is absolutely OK to not…

While the PPS 1100 course, Citizenship and Community Service, is required for a Bachelor of Social Work degree, students working toward a Bachelor of Science, fine art or art degree may substitute it for a lifetime fitness credit. The course is open as an elective to all other students. According to the current course catalog, “In addition to one weekly classroom hour, a minimum…

By Taylor Wolf | Social Media Editor On Tuesday night, the Texas Collection presented its spring lecture “On Changing Tides: Doris Miller, Pearl Harbor and the Civil Rights Movement,” featuring Dr. T. Michael Parrish, who explored the life and legacy of African-American Waco native and WWII hero Doris Miller as an icon of the early civil rights movement. Miller was raised in a region that is now covered by Lake Waco and he enlisted in the Navy in September 1939 during the Great Depression. More notably an athlete than a student, Miller was not able to pass the Army entrance…

By Taylor Wolf | Social Media Editor Some of the most annoying things to me are 1) trying to talk to someone but not getting their attention because they have earbuds in or 2) walking and having to dodge people who are enslaved by their phone screen instead of the path ahead. While some may argue that it is an introvert-extrovert issue, I think it goes deeper than that.Regardless of the reasonings, observing people refuse to be a part of a public space by completely ignoring everyone in it just kind of breaks my heart a little. It feels like…

Taylor Wolf | Social Media Editor “The Upside” takes a deep, yet accessible dive into the real life that we seldom see in this age that’s dominated by big budget and unoriginal films. Director Neil Burger’s film shelves the explosions and running-through-the-airport scenes for something that we could all very well experience in our own lives. The story begins with a flash forward scene that, quite frankly, I perceived to be useless in terms of stimulation. The rest of the film is pretty straightforward, so the six-month flash forward seemed out of place. Kevin Hart’s character, Dell Scott, is an…

By Taylor Wolf | Social Media EditorDear Washington, Even though we’ve only spent 13 of my 21 years together, I can honestly tell you that you are the only state that holds my heart — my complete heart. I’ve had the great fortune to gaze upon your beauty for most of my life, but still, after all these years, it can render me speechless. You might be the most uniquely beautiful place I’ve ever experienced. While my favorite features of…

By Taylor Wolf | Social Media Editor I get the feeling that people often like listening to the sound of their voice more than their thoughts. We’re uncomfortable with stillness. We’re uncomfortable with silence. I don’t believe that every conversation should be used to argue or talk at someone about your views. Think about the purpose of conversations: Is this conversation turning into being just for and about me? Or do I actually respect this person and what he or she has to say? Social media platforms are the greatest scene of this tragedy as the nature of posting and…

By Taylor Wolf | Web and Social Media EditorDon’t get me wrong. I love Joey from “Friends.” I’m definitely a fan. I just think there’s a major problem with his relationship with his female BFFs on the show. Joey is often described as a womanizer who is actually very caring, innocent and well-intentioned. The care he has for his friends is evident throughout the show, especially when he defends his gal pals and is protective of them. However, he can also be very disrespectful and gross toward Phoebe, Monica and Rachel. Joey is also very disrespectful of the women he…
