Baylor football has had a rough opening to its 2015 season. Though they are 2-0 on the field, the Bears have not had a perfect record off the field this year. After incidents of coach and player suspensions, as well as the national attention from the Sam Ukwuachu trial, many have begun to wonder if these distractions are affecting the Bears. Most recently, Baylor announced that starting tight end Tre’Von Armstead had been dismissed from the team for violation of team rules. “It’s hard to remain focused [with the negative attention] but at the same time, we can’t get distracted…

Baylor women’s tennis started its season with success, finishing the Under Armour/H-E-B Kickoff with a 7-2 record at the Hurd Tennis Center this weekend. Baylor went 3-1 against Ohio State in singles Saturday. Sophomore Kelley Anderson won her first match of the season after defeating Ferny Angeles-Paz (6-3, 6-3). Freshman Elizabeth Profit picked up her first collegiate career victories after going 3-0 for the weekend in singles play. Sophomore Theresa Van Zyl began the competition with a 2-0 start thanks to a three set victory over Olivia Sneed (6-2, 5-7, 6-2). The sophomore suffered her first loss of the season…
Last season, Baylor failed to make the College Football Playoff after Ohio State narrowly edging out the Bears. Both teams had similar records – one loss and their conference title. It could be argued that Baylor’s two best wins (TCU, Kansas State) were better than the Buckeyes’ (Michigan State, Wisconsin). Taking it a step further, Baylor’s loss to 7-5 West Virgina at Milan Puskar Stadium was clearly better than Ohio State’s 14-point loss to 6-6 Virginia Tech at The Horseshoe. Yet the Bears were left out of the playoffs, and the Buckeyes found their way in with an unproven third-string…
Baylor volleyball has won seven of its first nine games this season. The Bears host their final home tournament of 2015 against Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. tonight at the Ferrell Center. The Bears look to remain undefeated at home in the Baylor Classic. Freshman middle hitter Shelly Fanning has enjoyed the experience under first-year head coach Ryan McGuyre, and said one of the goals is to go unbeaten at home this season. “[Staying undefeated at home] is going to take a lot of hard work and determination,” Fanning said. “We’re going to have to be good at the…
Baylor tennis is thriving after both the men’s and women’s teams claimed the Big 12 title last season. Ahead of the 2015-16 season, Baylor placed three players in the men’s ITA pre-season rankings, and two in the women’s ITA pre-season rankings. Senior Julian Lenz leads the men’s side at No. 4 and the Lady Bears are led by junior Blair Shankle, who was ranked No. 25. Junior Max Tchoutakian and senior Felipe Rios rank at No. 36 and No. 87 in singles, respectively. Senior Kiah Generette came in at No. 53 in the women’s preseason rankings. MEN The team’s success…
After a crazy week of upsets and record-breaking performances, I have come to the conclusion that I shouldn’t even try to speculate about what will happen in college football. Nevertheless, I enjoy making predictions and analyzing how games may turn out. Each week I’ll provide a list of my Heisman leaders. Here’s the shortlist after week two: 1. RB NICK CHUBB (GEORGIA) I may be in the minority for putting Chubb at No. 1, but his 8.8 yards per carry is impressive. Although he may not have scored this weekend, his 189 yards on the ground (9.9 yards per carry)…
The Baylor Bears defeated the Lamar Cardinals 66-31 on Saturday night at McLane Stadium. The lackluster performance from the No. 5 team in the country had many analysts wondering whether Baylor was deserving of such a high ranking. For most of the night, Baylor failed to showcase a flow and rhythm that is expected from a top-ranked offense like the Bears. Junior Quarterback Seth Russell started the game with precision as he connected on 16 of his first 19 passes for two touchdowns. However, his next pass attempt signified a distinct change in his performance Saturday night. Russell completed only…
Baylor volleyball took second place at the Dayton Invitational in Dayton, Ohio over the weekend. The Bears are on a roll, placing second or higher in all three tournaments in which they have competed, including a first-place finish in the Bear Invitational. The Bears won their first match of the weeked against the tournament host, University of Dayton, in a five-set battle. The Bears lost their second match to Cleveland State in four sets, snapping the team’s six-game winning streak. Baylor was able to bounce back in its next match though. The Bears cruised to a four-set win over Eastern…
Junior wide receiver Corey Coleman had a record-breaking night as he hauled in four touchdown passes in the Bears’ 66-31 win over the Lamar Cardinals. Coleman was too much for the Lamar secondary to handle as his performance broke a school record. Coleman struggled to get started early, as it took the Bears three possessions before the Richardson native made his first reception. After his first catch, he wasn’t shy about letting his presence be known on the field. From that point on, Coleman seemed unstoppable. “I’m a passionate player and I like to get involved, so when it wasn’t…
Baylor junior quarterback Seth Russell described his performance against SMU last week as “sub-par” after throwing five touchdowns, one interception and running for 62 yards and a touchdown against the Mustangs. “We weren’t quite sure what SMU was going to do but we completed a couple deep balls, we did a lot of things right but a lot of things wrong,” Russell said. “Overall, I thought it was a sub-par performance [for me].” Russell made his personal assessment on his performance looking forward to Saturday’s game. Russell expects improvement from his play. Senior receiver Jay Lee described Russell’s performance in…
Head volleyball coach Ryan McGuyre’s squad won the 2015 Hampton Inn Waco North Baylor Invitational over the weekend after defeating Cal Poly, Coppin State and Sam Houston State. Baylor volleyball team has found early success under new head coach Ryan McGuyre’s system, as they are now 5-1 on the season. After suffering their lone loss in the first match of the season against Colorado State at the Rams Classic, the Bears have rolled off five wins in a row. Coming into the tournament, several of the Bears’ players had been talking about the excitement of being in front of their…
Baylor wide receiver Jay Lee may not have gotten as much attention as other pass catchers on the team this offseason. That wasn’t the case Friday night at Gerald J. Ford stadium as Lee caught three passes for 70 yards and three touchdowns. Lee caught his first touchdown pass from junior quarterback Seth Russell in the first quarter, putting the Bears up 21-14. Lee’s touchdown came at a critical point in the game where the unranked Mustangs were hanging in the balance with the heavily-favored No. 4 Bears. After the quick start, Lee experienced a rusty spell by committing a…
Fresh off a second-place finish at the Rams Classic last weekend, Baylor volleyball returns home to host the Hampton Inn Waco North Baylor Invitational tournament. The Bears play Sam Houston State in their home opener at 4 p.m. today at the Ferrell Center. First-year head coach Ryan McGuyre said he is confident heading into the Bears’ game against the Bearkats. “I’m looking forward to playing at home … we learned a lot of things that we can work on this past weekend,” McGuyre said. “The foundation is there;. I like how we fought and battled in every single match [of…
Baylor tennis will be well represented in this month’s 2015 Oracle/ITA Masters tournament, as senior Julian Lenz and junior Max Tchoutakian are in the men’s draw. Baylor women’s tennis player Kiah Generette will also be in the singles draw after she made the field as the Oracle wildcard entry. Lenz began last season ranked No. 1 in men’s singles, but eventually ended the season at No. 4 after he went 26-9 overall (17-8 against nationally ranked opponents). Tchoutakian received Oracle’s wildcard berth into the tournament after his performance from last season where he finished 18-12 overall (7-8 against ranked opponents).…
Baylor quarterback Seth Russell is no longer in the shadows of starting quarterback. Bryce Petty is gone and it’s Russell’s turn now. The last time Russell started a game (Northwestern State in 2014), he put on a unexpectedly commanding performance by throwing for 438 yards and five touchdowns. “I wasn’t surprised [by the performance]. The guys around me make me look good,” Russell said. “That’s their job. I’m going to throw the ball up to them, and it’s up to them to make the play.” Russell is humble in his reponses to the media, but his numbers from last season…
